Never thought to do that... We just hold them up towards a light and look through them. If you can see light through the filter its good and if you cant then we change it. You can also tell by how heavy it gets. Worse case scenario you change the air filter too soon and when your talking about the quality of air going into an engine nobody should have an issue with a couple hundred dollar air filter every now and then
