I’ve been considering ordering a used CM870 ECM to have as a spare and having my local dealership flash the latest program on it. How do I know which ECM is compatible with my engine other than just matching the part number from my current ECM?

I hope that you are also are aware that the software for the CM870's has not been updated by cummins since about 2012 or so (10+ years ago) .. so having it 'updated' is pretty much fruitless at this point if your existing ecm was updated, replaced, re-flashed, etc. at some point in its distant past.
