Fuses checked /pulled. Went to power wire to ecm / yes . Checked power here and there . Pump now working overtime . Cycles fuel back to the tank . Truck now FIRES OFF , then dies . Could it be the gear pump. I think im ready to question the ecm . It gets running then it cuts out dash lights flashing / check engine ect .

You need to check fuel pressure while cranking as well as running. I think 260 psi is the low end of "in spec" but don't quote me.

Have you checked and changed your fuel filters? Also blow out your fuel lines. You may have sucked some garbage up from the tanks or when changing the lift pump. Could also be the fuel pump but that normally comes with a code.

It appears this thing is working , I hear the fuel being cycled through. It is returning to the passenger side tank . It also seems it does not hold its prime . I got it to run , then it dies . I am stumped . I am thinking a check valve, then I am also thinking ecm.Thank you for your help .

sounds like air in the system.. either keep rolling it with smalll short starts or let it snort some ether. if you can get it to run on 5-10 seconds of ether i would think that would be enough to purge any large amounts of air the and the small amounts left would just run a bit rough.

if you have insite try to get a visual on what the fuel pressure is when it catches and see if it falls off before or after it dies.

I think I am going to be doing a fuel check valve as well as a fuel pump tomorrow. I get it run , for a few seconds dies , then looses prime or just won't start . Looks like it has an older reman fuel pump on it already .By the way the lift pump says cummins but in big letters .. MADE IN CHINA .

Where did you purchase it?

RE: 870 2006 fuel lift pump - Nilao - 07-11-2019

I ordered mine at International. Came in a Cummins box, part has made in china on it. You made sure the orings were in place and didn't shift or get pinched when you put the new lift pump on?

I would not just start throwing parts at it without verifying pressures first...

I agree with Nilao, fuel pumps aren't exactly cheap. I think mine was $500. But that was a road side deal in the banjo playing country of southern Virginia.

Block off the pressure release on the fuel tank caps and the vent to one tank and then blow a few psi in to the other tank vent. Looks for leaks in the fuel system 1st. Then go chasing other parts issues.
