Another thing that kills these pumps is they run at like 33000 psi pressure. They can be turned down to run at 25000 or less with tuning and timing adjustments. That’s a lot less stress on the pump and injectors.

Uni,

Is there a serial break to confirm this or is this simply a fuel pump upgrade when replacing the parts? The serial number for my engine is 799033XX.

Not that I want to stretch the replacement of the parts as mine is at 270k now, just would like to know to satisfy my own curiosity.

BTW, I was reading the back of my butter container and noticed a very familiar image...lol

there isnt a serial number break unless your engine build date is fairly new (2017 or newer). You can tell the old tappets and rollers from the new ones by the side play of the roller pin. In the old ones the roller pin had keepers to keep the pin in the roller. The new DLC ones free float and have no keepers to keep the pin centered. You can push them in and out freely.

Appreciate the response. The build date on mine is 2/16 so I'd be out for the newer style for sure. Just a little more info to store in the arsenal. I may go ahead and order the kit to rebuild the pump and get it done before I hit the 300k mark. After hearing all the horror stories, it's just not feasible to gamble with my livelihood.

RE: CM2250/CM2350 Fuel Pump - SquareOne - 06-03-2019

So I've reviewed the thread Rawze referenced in post #31 thoroughly, and I've called Cummins on the Barrel / Plunger repair kit #5406130....it's amazing to me clueless Cummins personnel really is when I ask them about this. Really disappointing to say the least! I just want to get all the info correct and verify with the greater minds on this site before ordering the pieces to rebuild this pump... (these are PN off the Quickserve site)

FYI this is for a CM2350 (build date 2/16)

Barrel / Plunger kit - 5406130 (x2)
Fuel pump head gasket - 2872513 (x1)
Pump Tappet - 4359134 (x2)
Sealing Washer - 4954944 (x2)
O-Ring seal - 3867641 (x2)

Would this be all that's needed for the complete critical part rebuild? I have yet to figure out what actually comes in the Barrel/Plunger kit so some of the above may be repeat of whats in the kit. Asking Cummins is borderline useless.

Simon999 had an excellent post at the end of the above referenced thread, but since it has been over 2years, I just want to be sure there aren't any changes we need to be aware of.

Just as a reminder -- I saw this over at Mr. hags today... It is what is left of a crank and rod bearing(s) for a truck that someone was lazy and did not heed these warnings, despite being told.

Apparently the guy replaced the rollers on his pump, tried to save a few bucks, knowing the lower part of the fuel pump was getting scored, thinking it would be alright for a while. -- A month later, everything seized up in the engine, and this is the result...

-- Trying to save a dollar,.. cost him most of his engine + crank!.

RE: CM2250/CM2350 Fuel Pump - SquareOne - 06-03-2019

Wow, yea thats a mess! In all actuality, I'd feel better just replacing the whole pump...to the tune of over 4k...but at least it would be brand new.

So, that customer had a scored Fuel pump camshaft and put new rollers on top of it? Am I reading that right?

However, if there's no visible wear on the camshaft, the rebuild would be feasible correct?
