That would be a much wiser choice. Not trying to discourage anyone, but there are shops all over that are quick to take your money and give you a bit more HP,.. But most will not tell you that as an engine gets older, the more risky it is to do.

What is the max hp and torque that can be obtained for this motor.

You weren't very specific...

That would totally depend on if the emissions was still in tact, and if your looking for a factory program or possibilities with custom tuning methods..

You also did not mention your application, like if it is for a truck you intend to haul freight with that you expect to go a million miles with, etc.

the highest factory program without causing emissions issues would be this one..

-- AV10183.xx (475-HP) (CPL 2732) - AV10236 for newer DPF Style. It has 1745 ft-lbs in the 1100-1600 rpm band.

I know this is the big CPL, that was also used for the 600/2050.
Which OEM cal is the correct one for this truck model?

I know I could ask this offline, but lets let others learn too. Currently have @m*m^2 no HP increase overlay. IF I have hurt my motor and am goin home to rebuild it, it will have the liners set at .014-.015 and of course hand torqued head and very acute attention to detail during assembly.
Would you recommend MMing the OEM cal or go full custom tune?
I am looking for solid performance to move the weight without sacrificing longevity/reliability.
And of course, why?

With emissions in tack and using a factory program only ...

-- AV10098.xx (550-HP) (CPL 2919) - AV10271 for newer DPF Style. (1887 ft lbs torque 1150 - 1600 RPM band)

100% compatible with..

-- AV10103.xx (600-HP) (CPL 2919) - AV10275 for newer DPF Style. (2050 ft lbs torque 1150 - 1300 RPM band. Then it drops off from there.)
and...

-- AV10104.xx (600-HP) (CPL 2919) - AV10275 for newer DPF Style. -> has the same 1887 ft-lb settings as the AV10098 program in the lower rpm ranges, but has the HP up at 600 at 1600+ rpm, making it a lot less harsh on the engine.

Comparing the AV10098 to the AV10103...

The AV10098 has 1887 ft lbs at 1600 rpm where it should actually be run under high torque load to prevent liner issues long term, and the AV10103 has 1900 ft lbs at the same 1600 rpm. I.E. there is only 13 ft-lbs difference, and it cannot be felt at all up at the higher rpm range where you would want to pull hard with one.

Everyone brags about having that factory 2050 tune put into their in their higher hp trucks but it really is mostly just harder on the engine more then anything. The 2050 torque is only at the bottom end (1100-1300 rpm range) where it really is not that good for them. It makes for higher risk of liner issues on them, and is more indicative of something you would see like in a fire truck that makes a lot of short trips in a big hurry. Those types of tunes that have a lot of low end torque are hard on an engine and shorten its life quickly.


Comparing the AV10098 to the AV10104...

<- I would much rather think that this would be the best tune for a heavy haul highway truck long term, and NOT the 2050 tune that only has an advantage in low rpm while hammering hard at the liners. This would be a much better choice in the end if longevity was a concern at all, and there would be no measurable difference from the AV10103 at higher rpm (1650) where the engine should be worked at its hardest. I.E. - you get the same 600-HP without all the hammering in the low end.

For an MM truck with AV10098 in it,... If you wanted to haul heavy and were geared for it to be in the 1600+ range when pulling hard like you should be,... custom liner height and head torque, etc.. and you could stand for having to do rods and mains at 600k instead of 800k ...

Max I would want to custom tune it to would be around 680 HP or so, but limit its torque below 1300 to about 1800 or so, and peak it at 1700 to 2100 ft-lbs of torque.

An example would be Something like this perhaps?...

I would also limit the boost to around 36-37 or so and let the EGT's run slightly higher just to protect liners and bottom end etc. a bit too.

Agreed, running big weighs an engine should not be operated any lower than 1450-1500 rpm. The stress duration is just too long at any rpm lower than that and will dramatically shorten longevity.
I believe this is why I have never had liner issues. I refused to bump the power rating to 600/2050 when offered for free from my home KW dealer. I don't pull lower than 1500 as a rule, occasionally when I was preoccupied or busy communicating with pilot cars or something I would go to 1400, but that was the exception, not the norm. The reason my engine was inframed was because of a cracked head that I believe was a manufacturing defect. It wasn't cracked in the usual suspect places, it was cracked on the intake plenum over #2 behind the ECM cooling plate through to the coolant passage. The motor consumed coolant from day 1, and nobody would accept it and do any real investigations for me. Upon taking them to court when I finally had the discovery documentation, I found that the cooling system pressure test procedure was only done for 2hours maximum. No wonder they never found anything, they weren't really looking!

You didn't mention the rating of the AV10104 cal, I am assuming this is the 600hp 1850tq file?

That's such a beautiful torque and power band that it brought a tear to my eye!
