CM570 high idle enable - Johnny LongRifle - 09-06-2025 Hey guys, Working on my brothers 2000 W900b with a CM570. I installed a new (rebuilt) ECM a few months ago after the truck had been down for 9 months or so. Got it running and back on the road. That apparently ticked off the mechanic who had been "working" on it. Long story short, that guy broke into it one night and changed a bunch of parameters making the truck almost unuseable. He turned on a idle shutdown timer, installed a speed limiter, turned off the manual cooling fan function, and disabled cruise control. I borrowed a scan tool from my Cornwell dealer and got 3 of the 4 functions working again. What I cant figure out is how to enable the cruise control and high idle functions. I've enabled every cruise control and PTO option I can find, to no avail. The ECM is not seeing the cruise switch functions. I have tested the circuits between the switches and the ECM and all is well. Even tried grounding the circuits at the ECM to see if the state changes, and they do not. What am I missing here? Im an auto mechanic and don't really have a lot of experience with big trucks, but I can read a schematic and look at data on the scan tool, so Im not a total newb. Any help is appreciated. RE: CM570 high idle enable - tree98 - 09-06-2025 You need to flash the ECM again. Who knows what he did in there. Just flash the stock program back in. RE: CM570 high idle enable - Johnny LongRifle - 09-06-2025 I dont have that technology yet or I would. I have the adapters I need, but not the programming software. RE: CM570 high idle enable - marek4792 - 09-06-2025 You can remove the ecm and take it to a dealer to get it reflashed on the bench. RE: CM570 high idle enable - Cartman - 09-06-2025 have you checked if your clutch switch is in the released position RE: CM570 high idle enable - Johnny LongRifle - 09-06-2025 I have checked the clutch switch and the brake switch to make sure they are in the correct position. They are both released and not causing the cruise to be cancelled. I have enabled and disabled every cruise and/or PTO function that I can to no avail. Watching the data stream, the ECM is not seeing the cruise on/off switch, or the set/acell/coast, or resume status change. I verified all the circuits between the switches and the ECM, and they are ok. Grounding each cruise circuit by backprobing at the ECM shows no change in the data stream. I feel like instead of switching a few functions around he may have installed a tune file that does not recognize cruise or PTO functions. I have Insite on my computer but no license yet. That may be the next step. RE: CM570 high idle enable - tree98 - 09-07-2025 Maybe he flashed it with an incorrect template. Like Marek said, take the ECM off the engine and take it to a dealer to have it bench flashed. I think the issue is that you do not have a full grasp of what needs to be done. First and foremost, a used ECM is not a good idea. Is it even the right part#?.. and is it an exact replacement for the engine ser# that you have?. (assuming that it is for a moment)... - There are TWO things that have to be done (flashed in) to ensure everything is right with the programming in the ECM. A)> The base program (from cummins) that needs to be flashed into the ecm needs to both match the serial number of the engine, and also be compatible with the the vehicle. This can be found on cummins website, assuming it is the original engine (based on the esn#) that belongs in the truck. The programming is not a willy-nilly crap shoot, it needs to properly match both the engine and vehicle type. The correct base program WILL contain important vehicle-specific settings like general J1939 communications options like buss speeds, connectivity, etc. - It will also have proper offsets for vehicle intake and exhaust piping sizes, and other major things, but not any specific dash button addresses, etc. So .... the base program WILL NOT contain the vehicle-specific settings like button addresses or settings for ruise control, engine brake, brake pedal, A/C input options, and other connection info for communicating with the dash, buttons, pedals, etc. Those are vehicle-specific adjustment settings and are NOT part of the base programming itself... which leads to B... B)> The VEHICLE-SPECIFIC ADJUSTMENT SETTINGS (some of which you see in insite as 'features and parameters') has to also match the vehicle. THESE ARE NOT PART OF THE BASE ENGINE PROGRAMMING FROM CUMMINS! ... and are installed into the ecm separately. - ONLY THE VEHICLE MAKER/DEALERSHIP HAS THESE SETTINGS... NOT CUMMINS!. - SO, if they get lost or corrupted, etc.. then you have to take your ECM (or vehicle) to a dealership to have them put back in/restored. You can guess and try to adjust them with Insite, but some settings may not even be showing up.. and it can be VERY DIFFICULT to figure them out if you don't have a previous back-up of them. So.. like others have already said ... take it to the vehicles OEM dealership and let them restore the proper programming + all of the proper vehicle settings from when it was built, and the problem is solved. Many times, that is someone's only choice if those vehicle-specific settings were lost or corrupted. After that, and after everything is working properly again ... use your Insite software to make a fresh 'work order' and 'ecm template'. - The ecm template is a backup of the vehicle-specific settings that you can only get from the dealership/OEM. That way you have your own personal back-up of them if the ecm ever needs replacing again. RE: CM570 high idle enable - Johnny LongRifle - 09-08-2025 Thank you all for the replies. I went back to the truck yesterday with a fresh mind and rechecked all of the previous work by me and the previous mechanic. Rawze...Thank you for this forum and the wealth of knowledge here. All you other guys who chimed in, thank you. When I originally got the reman ECM from the aftermarket supplier, it was programmed with the Cummins ESN, as well as the Kenworth VIN and appropriate functions. We plugged it in and everything was perfect. Jakes worked, High idle and cruise worked, all was good. Well, Clint Wagner, the "mechanic" Who is now mad at us for not paying his ridiculous bill, snuck over to the yard in the middle of the night a couple weeks ago and changed a bunch of features and parameters in the ECM to make the truck unuseable the way its configured now. Being an Auto Mechanic and not a class 8 mechanic put me at a disadvantage maybe, but I still know how to read a wiring diagram and I know to read and interpret a data stream. With a loaner scan tool, I was able to get all the functions necessary for this truck to get back to work tomorrow morning. I found one ground wire coming out of the ECM OEM connector, that was not connected to ground. After grounding that wire, the ECM now sees the cruise switches change state, and the cruise and high idle functions are operational. The truck is back to work this morning. The only thing I don't have working is the tachometer. Does anyone have or can point me in the direction of a wiring diagram for that? There appears to be 2 signal wires at the tach, but I need to know where they come from and maybe what their waveforms look like. |
