Fuel gauge - 3406E - Yesterday

Noticed my fuel gauge is reading max even though it’s not full. Took a look in the tank and this thing is broken off. I think it’s some sort of breather because it does not lead to anything. Also there was a spring in the little cylinder but I tried putting it back together and it jumped out now I can’t find it. What the hell does this thing have to do messing up my fuel gauge reader??

Now it’s got me thinking should I block the hole with something for the time being? I dont want water splashing getting inside there if it starts to rain.
