Coolant Dam or not? - sonyg - 09-12-2018

I got a 2350 isx in a 2016 KW T680. I was going to change the dossier valve and the service manual says to use a coolant dam device which appears to be a air operated vacuum / pressure tester that will stop the coolant from draining out the engine block when you unscrew hoses to the valve. My radiator also has a warning sign saying not to drain coolant. Question is do I need this device or should I just try to change it without losing a lot of fluid? I know the video rawze made said they drained the coolant but didn’t know if that was ok with this system per the warning label. Thanks

The coolant dam device does not work so well for it. Once you break the line, you will have 2(TWO) open ends in the coolant system (the hose and the fitting it went to) and any vacuum you have pulled will be canceled by this. One will suck in air and the other will pour out coolant at a high rate anyways, especially while your unscrewing it. Holding your thumb over one of them helps but then you need to block the lines off with plugs while your doing so.

It is far easier to just simply drain about 5 or so gallons into a bucket.

When you want to put the coolant back into it and you have it all back together, pull a medium-hard vacuum (using a vacuum pump or coolant service kit) on the coolant system to get the air pockets out, then let the vacuum suck the coolant back in. That is the proper way to prevent engine damage.

We ran into the same problem that Rawze speaks of using the vacuum type system. This worked better for us.
