Anyone want to guess what these pieces are. There were several of them. It's my buddy's truck and he found them when he was changing his oil

Bull gear in front cover are a well known weakness. The bearing goes out and gear goes all “wiggly” and starts destroying itself.

Exactly what I suspect as well

Bull gear super loose.

You got lucky, I’ve seen them with almost no teeth left. One of the few issues with a series 60. Great money making motor.

Checking a bull gear and/or the conditions of it bearings on an S60 is kinda like checking valve recession on an ISX.
It is a known weakness, and failure to periodically inspect may cost you your engine...it drives the camshaft. If a cam stops turning before the crankshaft stops turning, it's never pretty.

Tell your buddy that he is one lucky SOB! Probably wasn't far off from catastrophic failure of the entire front end of that motor! Great catch by observing the oil that was draining out.

900,000 to 1,000,000 mile is almost the guaranteed marker for this to happen. If you leave it in any longer you just don't care about the engine.
