Do you own that trailer? Id get another 10% if i owned the trailer but we use so many different pieces that its almost not worth it.

I dont mind the lighter stuff, 4 to 5 mpg is alot better than 1.x
4.10 gears never get decent fuel mileage.

Im picking up a communication building thursday, 95,000 lbs, 12' and 13'9" tall. Probably gross 140,000 ish. Going from Duffield va to Sandston va. Only pays $2600 but should be 400 miles loaded. Its a bit of deadhead but still not terrible for a 2 day load. No escorts either. Going on a 4 axle step deck, they are really easy to load, sometimes you dont even need chains, just binders to the trailer.

I can get 4.5 mpg at 180,000lbs!
I guess my 4.10's on 11R22.5's must be holding me back:waaaht:

I like seeing the different kinds of work every one gets into. Love the heavy and OD guys chiming in. But along with your "mine's bigger than yours" can you help some of the topic conversation and maybe explain how and why you secured the load or what you may have done differently with it? There's an entire Bragging channel on the site that we can start a show and tell with load size. Ive got the biggest load hauled by far. (A 150lb 2'x2' gas metering head hauled 1200 miles for $2.10/mile and exclusive trailer rights on my 51' stepdeck. Man I had to keep a close watch on that one) This one is kind of for helping guys in the open air freight world learn a little bit so we can make it a tad safer out there.

Would you rather stay at home? Im not happy about it but $2200 after fuel is better than $0 for less than 2 days work and maybe 30 minutes of load securement and no escorts to worry about.

maybe he will chime back in and explain.. but even I know that your rear ends are not your problem.. quite the opposite. -- If you think for one moment that some (already) decent gearing is your troubles, then you are gravely mistaken.. --- it it either your truck, your engine, and/or what you do, or your right foot that is the problem.

4.10 gears are excellent for moving the heavier stuff, helps keep the engine rpm's up (greatly extends engine life when heavy all the time), and gives you the ability to have full power output when needed of the engine .. the rest of "it sucks more fuel" simply comes down to your right foot, or something else, and how much you abuse,.. or respect that added ability to get stuff moving when needed because you ARE geared correctly for what you are doing, it seems... and HAS THE ADVANTAGE over the other idiot-spec's trucks that are geared too tall, that can't get out of their own way.

These newer trucks that are geared way too tall,.. they get better fuel mileage, directly at the expense of engine life. Not because the gearing is any better,.. it is much WORSE... but because when an engine is running in low rpm ranges (because it is geared too tall),.. it is COMPLETELY UNABLE TO MAKE FULL POWER OUTPUT! - and therefore is exactly the equivalent as someone who is geared lower, but stays off the pedal, and only allow their engine to only make that limited power as well. -- it is the mega-fleets latest bean-counter way of making the engine limit its power output production, while the idiot driver holds the pedal all they way to the floor all day long.


I.E.> gear it too tall, so that full engine power cannot be produce,. saving fuel at the direct expense of engine life -- OR,.. Gear it right (like in your 4.10's) and learn to control/limit your engine's power just like the "geared too tall trucks" and get the same, or better fuel saving by learning to use your right foot better, and driving by your boost and pyro gauges.

-- Take even a 600HP, 2050 torque engine for example. If someone gears it tall, like 3.27's or some other ridiculously tall garbage then limits its rpm range to 1500 and below with gear-down protection + it can only go about 68 mph on a governor... then its average HP output for the engine is only 428HP to the tires when loaded heavy ... EVEN WITH a full 2050 torque. - As soon as you put a load on it and then try to go up a hill.. it falls on its face and that high torque beats the liners out of the engine 2x faster than normal.. cutting the engine life in half. - BECAUSE YOU HAVE ARTIFICIALLY LOWERED THE AVERAGE HORSEPOWER TO ABOUT 425 OR SO AND THIS IN TURN SAVES FUEL NO MATER HOW HARD THE TRUCK DRIVER SMASHES THE PEDAL DOWN >>>> BECAUSE THE ENGINE IS UNABLE TO MAKE A SUSTAINED FULL POWER!. -> ALL AT THE DIRECT EXPENSE OF THE ENGINE LIFE DUE TO LUGGING IT BELOW 1500!.

ANY VEHICLE THAT YOU GEAR HORRIBLY .. THAT CAN NO LONGER PRODUCE PROPER HORSEPOWER.. WILL HAVE BETTER FUEL ECONOMY BECAUSE IT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE ITS FULL POWER IN A SUSTAINED FASHION!... AND THE TRUCK OWNER COMPLAINING ALL THE TIME THAT IT FEELS WEAK!. -- AND IT IS ALWAYS AT THE COST OF ENGINE LIFESPAN WHEN YOU DO THIS!. THAT IS WHY THESE FLEET TRUCKS GEARED TOO TALL ALWAYS NEED AN IN-FRAME IN HALF THE EXPECTED TIME THEY SHOULD LAST!.

GEAR IT CORRECTLY.. SO THAT IT DOES NOT EAT THE ENGINE UP.. AND IT MATCHES THE LOADS AND APPLICATION.. AND THEN KEEP YOUR GODDAMN RIGHT FOOT OUT OF IT AND IT IS ACTUALLY FAR MORE EFFICIENT THAN THIS HORRIBLE LUGGING IDEAS... AND YOU DON'T EAT THE ENGINES GUTS OUT 2X FASTER ANY MORE!.. ITS CALLED DRIVING IT RIGHT VS SOME COMPLETE DUMBARSSE THAT HAS NO CONTROL OF THEIR RIGHT FOOT!> THAT IS WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO.

THESE MEGA-FLEETS FIGURED OUT HOW TO LIMIT THEIR DRIVERS RIGHT FOOT BY GEARING IT WAY TOO TALL.. AND THAT SAVES THEM FUEL AT THE DIRECT EXPENSE OF ENGINE LIFE... AND THEY COULD GIVE A DAMN ABOUT LONGEVITY BECAUSE THEY GET RID OF THE TRUCK BEFORE IT BLOWS IT =S GUTS OUT.. LEAFING THAT PROBLEM TO THE NEXT POOR BAS#TARD THAT BUYS IT USED!.
