871 head gasket - Heavyhauler - 12-08-2024 Hello to everyone, I have a 2009 cm 871 about 2 years ago I needed injector cups. so in good nature I bought a new head, checked the deck with a machine shop. Also all new hardware right from Cummings, head bolts, manifold, valve cover etc. I also said the hell with it and put all new injectors at the same time to avoid future head aches. With all that being said 175,000 miles later I have a weeping head gasket. external leak passengers side front corner of the head a block. I can't wrapped my head around why on earth this would be an issue so early. I thought to myself that if there was any corners cut or mistakes made, it would have showed up much sooner? I will be pulling the head off this week, at a shop that allows me to be involved to save time and also give me piece of mind. this will obviously give us if any insight maybe, the truck has never been over heated for the entire time i've owned it. Maybe a fluke, faulty head gasket ? RE: 871 head gasket - Rawze - 12-08-2024 its a well known issue. I talk about it in my rebuild series. one minute into this video, I talk about it.,.. RE: 871 head gasket - Heavyhauler - 12-09-2024 My mind is officially blown, I'm almost positive you nailed in right on the head... all puns intended I suppose. I should have known better the first time I did the head. is there a particular gasket maker/silicone that you suggest ? RE: 871 head gasket - tree98 - 12-09-2024 https://a.co/d/6TqoWjP IT'S NOT SILICONE, look at the package carefully. RE: 871 head gasket - Heavyhauler - 12-09-2024 your all a bunch of savages! in the most positive way. I literally can't thank y'all enough for your help. This week i'll be tearing the head off, I'll keep a photo/video long along the way and report back on my findings. RE: 871 head gasket - Heavyhauler - 12-18-2024 hey guys I have the up date on pulling my head gasket, it is in fact a bad head gasket. plenty of evidence. Tho no excessive heat or stretched bolts. the head is off to the machine shop to be gone through. Are there any improved head gaskets to get ? RE: 871 head gasket - Heavyhauler - 12-18-2024 I can't seem to figure out how to add a photo on here to show the issue RE: 871 head gasket - tree98 - 12-18-2024 To add a picture you have to choose "new reply" you can't add a picture if you go through "quick reply" To add you just "choose attachment" once it loads you choose "insert into post" I'm curious how the head was put on this last time? I witnessed some guys who claimed to be mechanic's drop a head on with a tow truck boom that wasn't really long enough and they had the head rigged up kinda cockeyed with some chains. They got it on but I'm sure that head gasket took a beating. If you watch Rawze's rebuild videos on YouTube you'll see they had the head perfectly square sitting directly over top the block and were able to lower it on gently without damaging anything........just a thought. |
