CM 871 head gasket up date - heavy hauler - 01-05-2025

Quick reminder for all... my head gasket let go on the front driver sided water jacket, external leak. The head came back from the machine shop, pressure tested, valves cleaned and seated, and a fresh surface. they said there was nothing alarming about the head, also gave them the gasket for further inspection, also saw nothing else other then the fail point. I had them check the deck, along with liner heights. truck has 800k in it. I would assume factory engine, I bought it used. cylinder walls are perfect , nice hash marks all even along with NO carbon built at the tops. the truck has been Demandated for at least the 4 years i've had it.

Still just unsure why the head gasket (OEM Cummings) replacement only latest 2.5 years , 175,000 miles.

Maybe it's just the picture but this looks like it's from a liner dancing in the block.

very good point seeing that spot on the head gasket, Im trying to send a few different angles of that same picture. There are 4 spots like that around each cylinder, perfectly uniformed.

pictures have a resolution limit. Maybe down scale them first.

The circled section of the photo is not an issue. It’s an impression from the crimped part of the fire ring in the gasket. Very normal behaviour.

If the coolant leak is from the very corner where you put the arrow, you might find a bit of erosion where the factory gasket was. They often do it. I usually put a light coat of permatex aviation sealant on both sides of that small corner section and also the opposite corner at the back of the head where the oil drains. It will fill any tiny gaps created by erosion over the years without making a mess for the next guy to deal with.

Here is my attempt to upload the picture again, I tried to lower the resolutions as stated. thank you for clarifying the small impressions, that makes sense because they are so uniform through out the gasket. But I will admit it was a good observation regardless. The deck ended up having some erosion just as everyone has , and had stated from the beginning. Has anyone ever used Balzona epoxy to cure the imperfections? Then putting the thin film of permetex ? the machine shop that went through my head had highly suggested it and stated ver good long term success with this tactic.

Most of us guys just simply use a light film of detroit jelly (anaerobic sealant) in that area, and that works just fine.

I appreciate it, that's what I will do. Other than this issue I really do like this engine, it pulls really good and i've had no other major issues.
