2021 MX13 pac car dpf and scr efficiency issues in need of egr tuneup - mikkhh - 01-27-2025 Four years old only 130 000 miles. Had lots of issues since it got 2-3 years old - scr efficiency faults, dpf faults (outlet pressure data erratic). Has been to dealer, cans have been baked, taken off, new nOX sensors etc etc. Those things cured faults for some time and all faults came back and check engine light was almost always on until... I got to it, pulled intake temp sensor, MAP sensor (completely plugged full of soot). Intake looks like a really hard one to clean out all the soot and carbon, most likely it needs head off, unless those plugs at side of the head are not for coolant then intake can be walnut shell blasted while the valves are closed. Going to replace dpf injector, MAP sensor, exhaust back pressure sensor and dpf differential pressure sensor. Also EGR is coming off, the cooler is going to get either replaced or at least properly cleaned. Going to check the cost of brand new OEM head, 4cylinder tier 4045 deere head was around 2k brand new OEM... Maybe the head is not expensive and it would make sense to replace it and forget about cleaning woes and also head getting cracked down the line after a few years, judging by other makes and also MX13 does not seem to have a good reputation either ways. Running it as is not a good idea at all since the intake clogging is not even at all air passageways and therefore I am afraid that some of cylinders are most likely running hotter than others due to more air being present. That can lead to pistons cracking and melting, have seen it on light duty 2017+ Ranger pick up trucks. Going to at least have a look at intake air passageways with boroscope. Better to be safe than sorry and overreact on diagnosis instead of replacing an engine. Also going to check the camshafts for wear since it had low fuel pressure fault stored, those things are known for cam issues sadly, even though it is older than two years factory goodwill is most likely going to pay for parts since it has all service records at dealer. The inside was nowhere as bad as I would have imagined. Picture is attached. So there is NO NEED to pull the head to clean the head. I was wrong this time and overreacted... Sensors should be checked yearly though, since that does not take much time at all. Doser injector looks not the best, but going to clean it since new OEM is eqvuivalent of 1000usd around here, probably will get cleaned with air and brush or will try ultrasonic cleaner on it. I have used ultrasonic cleaner before with great success on gasoline fuel injectors. EGR cooler got pressure washed, this soot falls off easily due to no coolant or pcv oil present unlike on small cars (usually they do not have PCV filters). Since there are two same usage same configuration trucks I will test to see if there is fuel mileage imorovements with one that has just the sensors cleaned and new IMAP VS the one that has intake mixer and egr cooler cleaned + doser injector cleaned. Cleaning it is not a bad idea at some point. RE: 2021 MX13 pac car dpf and scr efficiency issues in need of egr tuneup - mikkhh - 02-01-2025 From an engine standpoint yes without a doubt the EGR cooler flow is important for it running right. It seems to me that if EGR delta P sees lower than expected pressure coming from EGR side then engine ecu will try to compensate by raising exhaust back pressure. That would make logical sense for me. Also I think that the soot on cooler is going lower cooling efficiency and that makes for hotter intake gas and that makes more need for boost since hot air is not as dense as cooler air. So in theory the fuel mileage is going down and engine wear is going up. Also NOx gases are going UP since the combustion temperature is increased and therefore there will be lots of NOx faults due to this EGR cooler not being as efficient... Since there are two same year make model same usage tipper trucks I would get good before after reference comparision to see if there is fuel mileage benefits. That way there would be an incentive to keep these systems working properly by doing preventative maintenance. These trucks are not going further than 100 mile radius from workshop so on this case there is no big towing hurdles to be afraid of and towing equipment is there is there would be need. First truck is at work now, if there is visible gains then it will get serviced soon, if not then at the next oil change. The thing I am trying to find out here here is to show that EGR tuneup is not only for prevention of issues but it can also help fuel mileage wise. If and how much fuel consumption gets better is the main question. When there is visible difference that outweighs the cleaning cost benefit for a fleet then those will get cleaned like every two years along with baking the cans and yearly sensor clean and check. Most big fleets keep trucks for up to 3years OR 250 000 miles whichever comes first and then replace with new ones. Since they are the majority of new truck buyers the dealer does want to show minimal running costs - 90 000 mile oil changes, no EGR tuneups. Most likely there are no big failures within first three years. I think that is why there is minimal talk about PROPERLY maintainig those expensive vehicles. If there would be talks about need for oil changes at 10 000 miles (due to soot load in oil due to EGR and fuel in oil due to DPF regens) and yearly or over year emissions tuneups then there would be way less incentive to buy new trucks.
