Isx cm 870
I have an 06 ISX 15 cm870 that had and egr failure. It was running fine other than lag off the line. Once spooled up it hauls. Got home and sure enough the egr was 1/8” open. Chipped tooth on actuator. Had a highly recommended guy electronically evaporate the egr. I performed the mechanical process myself. 100% blocked on hot and cold side. They installed the program that he said is factory program. He had me unplug all egr sensors. When I went to test it, it is only running at approximately 50% power. No check engine light. Load max’s at 53%, boost and fuel are about half of what it was before the program. He said it had to be a boost leak and it was derating. Sure enough I found crack in intercooler weld. Repaired that, all new boots, new Intake pressure sensor, held 30psi for 2 hours and 50psi short time test. NO leaks. But it’s still half power. Do I have to reset the ECM somehow or is it his programming?
Engine only has 115,000 miles. Fuel is good, turbo actuator is operating, no restriction’s in intake side. Turbo is smooth and no play. Turbo was making 29psi with the egr and boost leak (ruling out turbo issues). It ran great with the boost leak and egr stuck open. Only change is egr blocked and program. He said they install the latest Cummins updated software. I thought that maybe the old program didn’t detect the boost leak and the updated software did was the reason for it derating.

I’m supposed to be in CO to work but don’t want to push it pulling passes like this. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Isx cm 870
Whoever did your demandate is a moron. 870's have derate logic located in the ram memory that can't be accessed in the program itself, it must be edited live. If this person doesn't even know that about this engine then you can bet your ass the rest of that program is garbage too.

Tell him you want your money back and have him flash it back to stock, then unplug the EGR temp sensor (won't hurt it a bit) and drive it like that. It will derate {the boost a bit only, but not power} and that's better than the 50% your in now. Then you'll need to get with "running rough" on the forum here and have it demandated properly.

RE: Isx cm 870
Bad delete programming is a plague in the trucking industry ... Everything that Tree98 said above is correct.

(assuming you live in a country where that stuff is ok to do)...
You could have simply Taken a hammer to the EGR valve to shut it fully if it was stuck partially open ... then re-installed it and leave electrical for it unplugged. -> Viola, a factory block-plate. No extra hardware needed.

The EGR temp sensor, on the intake side of the engine should be unplugged. Unplugging it puts the engine in its built-in no-egr operating mode. No re-programming of anything necessary to get it there. The factory file has a no-egr operating mode built right into it. The CEL light will be on in the dash, but the engine will NOT shut down over this.

I know of plenty of people who drove their CM870's a million plus miles exactly like that with zero problems. It will have a slight boost derate in it, BUT NOT ANY POWER DERATE. The boost should/will spike to 36 or so, then drop back (due to the boost derate) to 32 psi and hold steady while climbing a steep hill. The engine will still make full power with slightly less boost, and slightly higher exhaust temps. It does not really hurt anything driving it like that.

-- SO... get that trash-can garbage engine killing delete out of it, like was already mentioned.

Put the proper factory programming back in according to the engine ser# ... and undo any other trash that you did to it that was not necessary. Fix any other engine issues it has as well while your at it.

... and after you have it back factory .. and all that is left is the CEL and boost derate.. and you have driven it like that for a while to ensure there are no other issues... then .,.. It is worth getting the boost derate removed and making the CEL light go out.

To do that, get with forum member 'running rough' if you want that done properly. He is the person who does all the old 870's around here, and his work has been reviewed on here many times by myself and others to ensure it is not harmful.
