450 vs 500

Ok guys, looking at 13 and newer what's the difference in the 450 and 500 cummins. I know the hp is obvious.

The only difference I can think of, is it likely have a different cpl

a 450 is a tier-2 engine. a bit more fuel effecient, smaller injectors, etc.

a 500 could be a tier-2 or a tier3...

a tier-3 has bigger injectors, different style of pistons and overhead cam, and a bit less fuel efficient in general. ALthough not always the case, generally a Tier3 has a shorter lifespan (600k miles vs 900k avg. ) because they quite commonly are ordered by owner ops who like to use tall gears and stomp the guts out of what they got,... or ordered by those who haul heavier freight and working them hard.

So Rawze, one of the truck I am looking at is a 13 t660 with the 500 cummins in it and about 675k on it. I'm in the process of seeing what's been done to it if anything. It's a 10 speed though. Thoughts?

So rawze. What would be the better option in ur opinion for buying a used truck for heavy use. Buying a 450hp demandated and turned up to 550 or 600 or a 500-550 hp demandated and just put the torque up a bit in the rpm range? I know the 450s are much easier to find.

I'm not rawze and I know you directed your question to him but I have a opinion.

I have a factory 500 871 cpl 2733 small turbo.

1.8 million km original engine and head, alot of heavy weight hauled with this thing...

I've had it turned up at 600hp for the last couple years now and have yet to see any issue caused by it, my pyro does not get hot ever but I am always above 1500 rpm.

I pull hill better then alot of the big cpl trucks and use much less fuel.

I'm not saying it can't happen but I have yet to see a big cpl get better mpg then me and my engine seems to handle the power just fine, if I do have any issue come up..... It'll be from running the 625 overlay and a 8 soi for so long (which I no longer do) and hauling 140k loads.

Unfortunately I can only speak to what I've seen with my motor.

Factory 500 871 cpl 2733 small turbo -- Yes, that is the tier-2 engine (smaller injectors etc). With a 500 it can go either way depending on CPL.

When it comes to longevity, good programming, correct maint. etc. count the most. Second is how it is driven. Drive it nicely, stay away from high torque at lower rpm ranges, and they least a long time.
