Needed intake cam and overhaul so I'm back to shopping. Trying to be cautious and read and learn as much as I can. Just don't know much about the 2250/2350 stuff. It does but somebody currently has a deposit seeking credit approval. So I have to wait and see on it. That's the one I truly want

That's the one I truly want Well, best of luck! I've actually seen cams quite a bit worse than the one Rawze posted a pic of. -The best maintainence you can do for them, shim the oil pump to create more oil pressure, which results in superior protection IMHO. A fair amount of us on here have done this. We do not have years and years, with millions of miles on many engines to scientifically prove this theory, but no one has disproved it either. -Frequent overhead adjustments reduce the risk of valve(s) wearing enough to eliminate rocker clearance causing the rollers to ride the cam continuously not allowing the oil to get where it needs to be. I now do them annually. -Frequent visual inspections will catch issues early, possibly limiting you to either a cam going bad, but the rocker rollers not when you spot it, or vice versa. Popping a rocker cover is so simple and requires such a small time investment, I do this quarterly. When you are inspecting a potential used truck for purchase, not popping the rocker cover is inviting disaster. I have been pointed to some heavy equipment forums discussing cam issues in Cats as well. There are many anecdotes on this site of other engine mfg's with cam issues as well, it's a gamble I would simply not take. User's Signature: Why? Why do I always ask "why?" It has 600 miles but it may already be sold. Next to options are a 2010 with a cm871 with 420k still a Virgin. The 3rd option is a 12 with a 2250/2350 (don't know enough about them to know the difference) with 550k on it. Not sure which motor is a better one. Going to be pulling hopper 80k+ in the mid west and south east. Pretty similar specs otherwise. Thanks. I'd stick with an 871 over the 2250. Much better platform for constant 80k+ work. Bigger turbo, lower compression, no finicky common rail system, ect ect. With certain tweeks they are as responsive or moreso than the 2250. Chances are if its an 871 over 550hp at this point, counter bores probably have been done. A 2250 may be comin up on needing them..

The one in the picture is simply the result of not changing your oil often enough and carbon/soot packing. Pretty common on them for people who think they can go 25k+ miles at a time, have EGR issues, and/or use synthetic and extended oil changes.
