On the passenger side of the engine all the way in the back by the flywheel housing the engine number will be stamped into the top of the block on a machined surface at the top of the deck where the head and block meet in dot matrix numbers.

Looks like 94 3C

That is not the cummins part#. In the pic you provided though,.. it is there .. it is very faded, located below the set of numbers u mentioned. Yours is the 561 model housing, 3682614? (hard to see but this is what it reads). That elbow is the one commonly found on trucks like my Prostar... A 561 with its alternate impeller, not a typical 551.

Here is a Typical 551 elbow pipe (3684026)... (this is the most common one). they are found on pete's and other trucks with larger, more free-flowing CAC units. ...

And here is the one that typically belongs to the not-so-common 561 with its alternate impeller ... They are common on internationals.

I have seen guys go from the 551 to the 561 because it has bigger housing and elbow, thinking they can get some gains out of it. -- Everyone I have seen try this, they ended up loosing fuel mileage and had to eventually switch back. - Its funny though how it works so well on a Prostar and small tier engines though. I am thinking it was designed to be optimized when using slightly restrictive CAC units? -- Just a guess.

just some thoughts .. Not sure about the Cm870 and its turbo options. It may be different.

RE: Turbo ID
Unlike what most people would think,.. the subtle turbo sub-assembly differences in the 500 series range should be matched to the TRUCK according to its exhaust, intake, and CAC, not so much just the engine /power.

I have seen guys loose 1/2 mile gallon or more when they get it wrong.

what is your truck vin#?

The truck VIN is stamped there or the engine serial number is stamped there?

Chamberpains was suggesting using the truck VIN, I believe, which I don’t have for my engine

Ok daylight and not being in a hurry helps. Looks like 3682674, it’s faint but it’s there

Outside of clamp to outside of clamp is roughly 4 1/4” where it meets the turbo

I did compare the the CPLs but other than matching part numbers I don’t know how to dig deeper

RE: Turbo ID
The VIN gives this ESN
./uploads/201911/post_3200_1574616439_811ae83497ed256450e93cc5e63756ed.png

Which gives a superseded turbo assy of 2881993 for a family 2

If I go try to build a 8287 engine the best they offer is a long block which does not include a turbo... the 8287 long block also includes 8288, 8520 & 8523 which all appear to be family 1 engines and would be a different turbo (2881994)

The engine number would be back here if it's accessible.

I see where you’re saying to look but it’s a little buried. Thanks!

So a family 2 CM870 takes a larger or just different turbo than a family 1 CM870?
