RE: Fault Code 1117
Update: Tried running power directly from a new set of batteries I installed to the ecu didnt help. grabbed a gear fuel pump from the wrecker. Looks like a new replacement as it was not painted. Put it on the truck. Lift pump making a solid 14psi, new gear fuel pump making 350psi at high idle. Thought I had it fixed. Drove it with a loaded trailer like a bat out of hell for 20 miles over washboard gravel roads over rail tracks. Not a hiccup. Parked it left it idle, 15 minutes late its belching white unburnt diesel fuel smoke, like it does when it goes into limp mode. Argh. Next I want to try having Cummins Insite on it so I can catch the offending sensor or problem when it does that.

RE: Fault Code 1117
Ok so truck still the same issue. Runs great for a 30 minutes or an hour lots of power fuel pressure at the rail strong. Let it idle for a few minutes. Step on the throttle fuel pressure falls off to 120psi and white unhurt fuel out the exhaust no power. What is going on?

RE: Fault Code 1117
when it starts to do that release the fuel tank caps. Being it takes a hour or so maybe the tank vent tubes stopped up.....If thats not it look in tanks make sure theres nothing in them that may cause a restriction. Sounds to me the issue is lak of fuel and being it takes some time seems like maybe a floating blockage or tanks not venting.....

RE: Fault Code 1117
Checked fuel breathers they are clear, ran a temporary new fuel line no help. Discovered something interesting with the fuel pressure guage on the compucheck fitting at the gear fuel pump even while its runny crappy fuel pressure is strong 400psi at high idle, at the compucheck fitting by fuel filter only 90psi instead of its normal 300psi while running good. Something going on inside the IFS?

Bad fuel pressure regulator getting stuck wide open dumping fuel back to tanks?

RE: Fault Code 1117
Its as if injectors go wide open and it way over fuels.

if the injectors over-fuelled, the engine would rev up.

RE: Fault Code 1117
If the regulator is hanging and dumping fuel then there's not enough pressure to control the timing or meter the right amount of fuel. Its an incomplete burn due to the wrong A/F ratio.

RE: Fault Code 1117
Replaced both fuel pressure regulator. Thought was good took it for a 30 minute cruise. Came back to the yard. While idling I rev'd her up and back to running like crap pouring white unburnt fuel out the exhaust. Could it be an injector?
