Cm2350
So I was changing a injector today on my 2017 with a cm2350 and while doing this I found a loose bolt just under the cam on the exhaust side of number 4 I don’t have a clue where it came from or where it goes while trying to figure this out I also noticed that it has ruined the camshaft on number 4 exhaust as well can anyone possibly have any ideas as to what this stray bolt goes to yes I know it’s not supposed to be loose in the motor

RE: Cm2350
I don't think it even belongs in the head.... usually from my experience all the bolts under the valve cover are shouldered.

RE: Cm2350
That’s just it I don’t know where it goes I don’t think it could have made it’s way up to the top from the bottom without ruining the oil pump so I’m lost as to where it came from

RE: Cm2350
my bet is someone dropped it in when valve cover was off at some point.

RE: Cm2350
If someone dropped it in there it’s been in there since it was new I’m the only one who’s owned the truck and this is the second time that covers been off it’s only got 270k on it and both times it’s been off were for injectors I am going to run the overhead on it while it’s off this time and no the bolt doesn’t have paint on the head it’s like a black/green finish on it. It almost looks like what might be a timing gear bolt but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how it would have got where it was from there and not done any major damage

RE: Cm2350
Hard to figure out bolt size but looks like one for air filter can. Mechanics love to put them on the windshield shelve right above open cover. Then some rugs or wrenches can push bolt down.

RE: Cm2350
It’s a w900L I stopped and talked to a guy that all he does is Cummins motors and he said it’s not a bolt that would be inside the motor normally. He said Cummins uses only shouldered bolts
