Engine components are not made as well as they used to be years ago, but even still, it is not bad casting that did this one in.

The one in the picture is simply the result of not changing your oil often enough and carbon/soot packing. Pretty common on them for people who think they can go 25k+ miles at a time, have EGR issues, and/or use synthetic and extended oil changes.
