The recon heads are almost always packed in a box that barely wider then the head and is of very thin plywood on top and sides. ... at least, that is what Mr. hag said to me the other day anyways. Some of the bolt holes, will have clear signs of use around them on a recon head as well. ... and like you said, intake rear side of head, it will be stamped with part# + recent date without the "RX" on it. Personally though,.. even if i had to pay $1,000 more for guarantee of brand new head,,.. I would do so.
