On a side note 871 and up ECM's are tough as nails and there is almost nothing you can do to brick them. ask me how i know that...

Can a 871 be programmed to work on a 870?

I am by no means an expert on this subject but I would have to say no it couldn't. Otherwise these guys would be doing exactly that.
