I have tried a lot of different generators, gas and diesel. I bought a Hatz diesel 3500 from Craigslist a few years ago. I didn't pay much for it and it had crazy low hours. It was a little noisy but I hardly ever park in truck stops so I didn't mind. I used it until I turned it off one day and the roof mount AC was running a it messed the head up. Now I just use a Honda 3500 inverter generator that is super quiet and runs two nights on a tank. I would never mess with an APU, most people I know are always working on them. My set up might be back yard but I have been using it for a long time.
