I have seen cooling nozzles get clogged (usually by someone using aftermarket oil filters on oil changes), or sometimes damaged due to improper install due to carelessness. It usually leads to a cracked piston, but I would also suspect that it can cause a liner to maybe split. - Should be easy to find it if this was the problem.
