There was a separate DEF controller used on the 2010 - 2012 engines. The ESN would help. Problem is "year" sometimes doesn't tell a lot. There is calender year, model year and emissions year. They often don't line up. Plus supposedly there was some murky things with what "year" the engine was built. I recall being told that the day the crank went in the block was the build date for emissions. Coming up on the end of a calendar year going into a year where standards were changing some engine builders would overbuild what were basically short blocks and then finish them out after Jan. 1.

On the medium side I've seen MY 2011 trucks built as late as March of 2010 with EPA 07 engines. And schoolbuses are goofier yet. FWIW since the late 90's MY is a full year ahead of build year. Look at the year on the title (model year) vs the build date.

Fleets and rental groups benefit from this somewhat because the truck is often almost a year older than what the title says.

Again the ESN is the best source of info.
