In Germany they check on mandatory inspection whether the Calibration verification number matches the software that is supposed to be on the car and whether there is modifications done to software.

If there is then the car / truck will not get inspection passed.
There may be ways around that, but not always.

In Germany police is checking for manipulations and deletes. The video is in German, but there is option to auto translate subtitles.

And in EU remote readout tachographs are mandatory if you want to cross country borders with your over 3.5t truck or commercial vehicle.
