What the heck is this thing doing.

Yes it's d3mandated

No this unit does not have the davco 382

First and foremost, copy the program from the ecm and e-mail it to me for a review of what someone did in there. - You don;t know if the program might be part of the issues at this point, and besides that, it could be causing internal damage to the engine over time. Most delete programs are quite bad and do progressive damage over time, leading to premature turbo and major engine failures prematurely.

Next: - If the engine does not turn off for several seconds like you describe, it takes 2 component failure problems for that to occur. I have seen this many times,... and if your mechanic shop/ friend there does not know this then you need to seriously find someone more knowledgeable to work on that truck.

Matter of fact,.. that is likely WHY you have so many issues with the engine. - CLUELESS MECHANICS!!!... which nowadays is an absolute plague any more especially on red engines.

DO you think that if I owned it, that it would have any of those issues?> ... NOPE!.

Any-how,... for it to stay running for several seconds like you describe ... There are 2 (two) issues going on ...

#1. Someone had to have removed the guts from the fuel shutoff solenoid. That or it is stuck in the open state.

- This by itself however will not make it keep running like that,.. the engine would still shut off right away. It is only half of the reason for prolonged idle after key-off. There is nothing wrong with removing the guts of the fuel shut-off solenoid for troubleshooting, etc.. this hurts nothing, especially to help solve starting issues, etc.. but the mechanic should have seen right away the delayed shut-down problem that followed it.

#2. The second thing that has to have issues to keep it running after key-off is a very leaky fueling solenoid. One or more of the fueling solenoids has to be very leaky for it to keep running like that.. and that is revealing a fueling system issue.

Someone needs to adjust the overhead valves properly and then do an injector leak test on it. - Make sure it passes with flying colors, that there are no bubbles, etc.
here is info on how to do this properly on a CM870/CM871...

Matter of fact, did anyone adjust the overhead valves when they changed the starter>?>.. maybe they did it wrong and now, which can cause hard start issues if it was done improperly.

NEXT: You did mention that the ecm was not showing the 'cranking' in the data monitoring properly while cranking. Like has been mentioned... have the programming copied out and e-mailed off to me and checked as well.

- Worse case scenario.. you can make an appointment with Mr. Haggai's down here in griffin, GA. - Might be a long ride to get there, but they would certainly get to the bottom of its issues.
