The safest way is to swap one at a time. I had a bad one out of the box a few years back and got
a short lecture when I explained how when I unplugged it, the engine smoothed out. Apparently if you do that, the ECM can go into a silent fit and quit controlling them at random and I just got lucky, so I can't recommend it. Of course if yours is dropping out enough to throw a code, the ECM could already be wonky, so even if it runs funky, I'd give it 10 minutes idling before swapping to the other bank. That all said, on mine, when I unplugged the bad timing actuator, the engine smoothed out - and when I plugged it back in, it shook and missed like crazy.
