RE: My Pete rebuild Piddling around and figured I'd open my gasket sets and see what all I have. It would be really nice for a full schematic showing what the bag of o-rings goes to. Quickserve is great and all, but where the heck does it show the turbo oil return grommet @ the block? I've been looking all over trying to find a part #? Of course it's not in the kit, and neither are the plug o-rings.

RE: My Pete rebuild Cosmoline, packing grease, whatever you call it - they should undercoat cars here in the rust belt with the stuff. Solvent from the parts washer melted it off the best, but it's hard to wash a swinging 4' crank over a 3' parts washer. The little bits I missed melted away the best using this otherwise useless penetrating oil.

RE: My Pete rebuild Bearings mic'd, lubed, and crank lowered into it's resting place. Damned penetrating oil got on my socks and now I'm sporting some fresh chemical burns. It's hot, and I really don't feel like doing anything else, but I need to get the caps on and everything plastic wrapped and covered before I call it quits.

RE: My Pete rebuild When I put the main caps on, the way the sealant squished out the sides towards the bearings has me paranoid. If it was done during an inframe, no one would ever be able to see it, but since it's a bar block upside down, I did, and I'm going to pull some caps off and make sure none made it to the bearings. I remember seeing some on the back side of the halves when I cleaned up the caps, and now I know why. I think the bead suggested is just too much. But, I took a day off for important things like getting sunburned and eaten alive by lake flies.

RE: My Pete rebuild Pulled a main and my paranoia was pretty much unfounded. Block is flipped back over and awaiting liners. Practice on an old liner. I think this should do the trick?

RE: My Pete rebuild Well, I should have bought the cutter myself. So glad I went with .020" shims so that I still have block to cut. Intake Exhaust 1 13 13 13 14 13 14 2 13 13 13 13 13 12 3 11 11 12 12 12 12 4 12 12 12 12 12 12 5 12 12 13 12.5 12.5 12.5 6 12 13 12 12 12 12 Ironically, shim .021" had to go in #3 hole - was marked for cyl 4 - someone doesn't know front from back of block) So much for a relaxing weekend putting this together.

I read that, which is why I didn't just go with a Cummins short block in the first place. Of course I find this on a Friday night so I have all weekend to stew over it. If it wasn't for the 11's, I'd clean it up and set at .012", but now I need to get .032" shims. I'm just getting more pissed as I think about it. The point was to have all machining done and build a clean block. As crap gets moved around, it's too easy for dirt to get into things and assembly lube loves to collect dust in the air, so now I have to pull the crank again. I guess I should have checked liners first, but I don't enjoy flipping this thing over repeatedly and it was already upside down.
