Swap 10spd to 13spd Due for a clutch replacement soon and I am considering swapping in a 13spd... I would like to be able to split the top side gears....I pull van freight in Pennsylvania and at times I pull a long hill in 9th where I'm having to back out of the throttle to keep the RPM below 1650-1700 or up to 10th and I'm lugging the engine... My question is it worth doing such a swap or just leave well enough alone. Running 11r 22.5 tires...might drop down to low pro tires next replacement... | |||

Running 11r 22.5 tires...might drop down to low pro tires next replacement... when pulling those PA hills,.. you WANT to be at 1600-1800 rpm,.. that is the best rpm to pull with. -- that is, unless you are just trying to shorten the life of your engine for some unknown reason. RE: Swap 10spd to 13spd Being out of centeal PA, I pull the PA hills all the time. CM870, 10 speed 3.55 rears. Gettin 7+ every week pulling average flatbed freight. Drop the gear and keep your foot out of it. Less stress less fuel consumption and less engine wear. Now, if you need to replace the trans for mechanical issues and you have access to a reasonably priced 13 speed... Well then get at it. Splitting those gears makes for a lot more gear movements but allows you to keep the RPM's up above 1500 all the time when pulling. I'm gonna look into one here shortly when i pull the trans to replace a junk rattling out of balance clutch. But from what I've seen lately, reman'ed 13 speeds come with a healthy price tag. So stuffing a 10 back in it may be my cheapest best option. | |||

RE: Swap 10spd to 13spd Keep the rpm's up and the boost down as a much as possible. When i found out i had to replace my 13 spd due to coolant going into the tranny.... i was fucking pissed! the price tag on it wasnt cheap, even with a reman from weller. Id stick to that 10 spd of yours and if you want to replace it, the damn thing wont cost you 5k. I think weller sells the 10 spd for 2k-3k?. RE: Swap 10spd to 13spd Hey Guys, I read all of the time and never post, but I could not pass this up. I live in and go through the PA and surrounding mountains all of the time. I have an 871 tuned to 485 (was a 435 turd). My 2010 Lonestar was a 10 speed with 22.5 low pros and 3.58 rears. The 435 was horrible! My trans was trashed when I bought the truck and I thought that a 13 speed would maintain my top end while the extra splits would decrease the horrible lugging on the inclines, so I replaced with a 13 speed. It came at a cost. The 13 speed had a lower final drive ratio. It was supposed to only be .02 I think but I lost way more than that. It was not the shops fault as they only go by the trans serial number info. I had to goto 22.5 tall rubber to lower my rpms to a reasonable level at 65 to 70 mph (posted speeds). Rawze, I do have an amazing and very reasonable shop to recommend for your forum for trans or clutch work here in PA. Its all they have done since the 60's. My swap with new clutch and flywheel was $6700 and some change. They did it in a few hours and took me into town and picked me up so I could grab a bite to eat. RE: Swap 10spd to 13spd Done a 10-13 swap on my ol pornstar last year. Best thing i ever done. Just make damn sure ur driveline shop knows wtf theyre doing when they shorten it and have them press all new u joints while theyre at it. | |||
