Cm 870 head being replaced
Greetings all, 1st time post.

My truck is an 05 9900i with a cm870 that shows up as 453 hp on serial number check but was stamped 435 factory on valve cover.

Truck had a total inframe at 906000 km now is at 1173000 km. Keep in mind it is at 32000 engine hours due to much PTO use. Not sure hours when I had it inframed but it was approx 5 years ago 270000 km ago. Head was replaced at inframe and injectors.

So the problem recently has been fuel in coolant/coolant in fuel. Dealer is certified Cummins but from what I'm reading here I'm guessing that doesn't count for much. I'd rather take your advise!

So let's get to what the dealer is saying. I mentioned to them about an updated service bulletin on replacing the lower injector o rings. They knew about cups on newer models but this was news to service manager. He looked it up and booked it in. After taking it apart they are stating that it won't work as the coolant is coming from the top and bottom of cup? So it needs a head. Here is where I'm getting cold feet as we began talking liner depths after I've been reading on here about .014-.015" protrusion to get a better seal with head. They were skeptical both the manager and the technician and mentioned that .009-.010 Is high and as long as it's positive you shouldn't need to worry about it with just head replacement.

How much extra am I getting into here if liners are lower than .014" but still positive protrusion? Should these be counterbored and shimmed to .014"? Head is not quite off yet. [/size]

Would a vibration dampner and bearing roll in be a good idea at this point?

Thanks for all the valuable info here!

RE: Cm 870 head being replaced
32,000 engine hours is more than a million miles of use.

COmplete inframe, brand new head, liners at 0.014" .. etc.etc.etc.

anyitng less is jumping over a dollar to save 10 cents and it will not last for sd$it.

What you have said so far points towards that stealers$it being the typical gaggle of clueless fuc#tards. You should run away from them as fast as you can.

here is your likely future...

RE: Cm 870 head being replaced
Thanks guys. Wow wrong parts on an inframe? That is crazy. It's sad because you see the stealershit has Cummins certified signs up and your first instinct is to trust their "expertise." I got this gut feeling of dread when they started arguing about the .014" liner protrusion. They are pretty deep into it now though....
They just called me now as i was typing this and they have the head off and the linings are all at .009 to .010" and another inframe not needed. There's a surprise that they said that.
Is there better maintenance I could be doing to help this head and motor last? I do oil changes now by engine hour at 350 to 400 as my monthly mileage is low and PTO hours high. Maybe i should go 300 hrs? What about coolant flush how often should that be done? Cleaning the egr out? I hate to be "that guy" but considering I had the inframe of $30k done such a relatively short time ago it seems financially insane to delve into it again over .0004 to .0005". This is by no means doubting that it should be done to those 0014" specs. Just seems like a redundant and huge expense if the truck is running strong and the only issue is the head.

RE: Cm 870 head being replaced
Or just get new liners and have them put in at correct depth

That's pretty scary. How can they be so far off when they are supposedly quoting Cummins to me stating .09 to .010 is the high range of liner depth? Has Cummins not updated their service procedures on these engines in over 15 years? Smh it's like even the truck manufacturer is set against the owner op having success.

What is with these heads also? Another post right after mine cm 870 head out after 40k. I would assume my failure at least was part related as it was fuel in coolant. The stealership made it sound like they change these all the time too
