Isx15 randomly shutting down
Hey everyone, first time posting here. Appreciate the help in advance.

I'v got a 2012 pete 587. Cummins isx15 CM2250. Truck has about 1.1 million miles. Original engine. No overhaul. Does have a def mandate.. since about 500k miles ago. Very well taken care of.

Here's the issue, engine dies randomly but only at idle especially after running at cruising speed, then coming to a stop and after a few seconds it cuts off...sometimes. There's times I can go for a whole week and it won't happen, it is getting worse now to where it's almost impossible to drive. Basically cuts off almost every time rpm's drop to idle. Sometimes it doesn't full quit, it will drop rpm almost dying and idles back up. Anytime I am able to give it full gas before it quits I can keep it running.

Here's the fun part, No check engine light! No codes whatsoever. Iv seen the couple threads on here with similar issues and tried the few things suggested. Tapped on the ECM..did nothing. Checked grounds and the few places that Rawze mentioned where wires can rub through.. nothing unusual. Since the truck dies only during idle I'm suspecting a fuel issue? Injector leak? I'v replaced the high pressure fuel relief valve that sits on the end of the fuel rail, retorqued the injector feed tube nuts 57 ft lb "none were lose", and retorqued the high pressure fuel lines of course. All were fine as well. Do I need to do a injector leak down test next?

Who did the demandate? If not 1 of the guys here guarantee its blocking codes from showing up, and you need to pull a copy of the program and send to rawze for review

Yes do the leak down test to a t as shown by rawze

When was the last time the high pressure fuel pump was rebuilt/replaced, those are notorious ceramic flaking engine killers around the 400k mi mark

RE: Isx15 randomly shutting down
A shop in Atlanta about 6 years ago. I'v taken a few trucks to them after this one as well. Paid top dollar for what I was told a good program, never had issues for all these years and engine/abs codes did show up and we quickly addressed them.
I'll have to talk to the shop if they let me get a copy, doubt they will..

The High pressure pump was rebuilt with new superseded parts at around 600k.

More then 90%+ of all de-mandate programming is harmful to the engine and/or turbo over time, and typically has a lot of faults hidden/disabled that have nothing to do with the emissions components themselves. - Most of these yahoos doing that stuffs resort to disabling a bunch of faults (including important engine faults) instead of shutting anything down properly. It makes the engine very difficult to troubleshoot and/or solve issues until something major breaks.

It does not matter what you think about the programming ... it needs to be reviewed properly. Bad programming does damage progressively over time, all while the truck owner swears there is nothing wrong. - Denial is the bane of bad deletes and the people who become the victim of it long term.

Also, like others have said.. poorly done / bad delete programming is notorious also for hiding faults that would otherwise make issues like the engine dying, power and turbo issues, etc. , making it far more difficult to know if there is even an issue, nonetheless can find it. So at the very least... Having any custom programming properly reviewed would be the place to start with it regardless.

At the very least, if it was done properly, then you will know for sure instead of speculating blindly about it. Then, you can also move onward towards finding its issues.

Copy the program from the ECM and e-mail it to me for a proper review of what someone did in there.

Ok, can that only be done with a Cummins insight tool?

A cheap laptop + inline-6 adapter kit ($300 bucks or so) + the CT software which can be likely had for free off the interwebs.
