X15 Efficiency EGR leak options Hi guys, We bought a used 2019 KW T880 with an X15 Efficiency 450 last year that had 150,000kms/93,000 miles. It is in the shop now for it's annual inspection. Local independent shop. It's our first heavy truck after hauling with Class 5 trucks for years. We are only hauling our own equipment at a max of 40,000 lbs so it has way more power than we need and doesn't work hard. We only put on about 30,000kms/19,000 miles annually. Shop is saying it has an EGR leak and it is the slip joint style pipe, not the bellows style. The cost originally was quoted at $466 to put a new seal and gasket in. Then it escalated to $1166 due to needing to remove the turbo and EGR cooler. And now it's at $1900 because "we found the center sleeve to be loose in the exh manifold end and also in the egr cooler. would never seal" The options I was presented with initially were: 1. fix it cheap with the existing EGR system which is known to fail regularly and was "updated" by going back to the old bellows style which is more reliable. - the "cheap" fix is now up to $1900 2. replace with the bellows style, requiring a new manifold - I located the parts used and the total for parts and labour is $2700 ish 3. remove EGR and tune - initally quoted at $4400 but then realized there is no block off plate for my engine and state they have to figure out how to do it. Which tells me they've never done it and I'm not interested in that route. A very well known and recommended shop quoted around $8000 and I am simply not interested in spending that much at this time. With all of that information and our usage are there any opinions on if it is worth the extra cost to convert to the bellows style EGR for the $800ish difference in price? If the EGR didn't start leaking until now we should get another 5-7 years out of it if we replace it as-is and it will cost us another $2k at that time. My understanding with the bellows style is it will last longer and be cheaper to fix when it does leak. Is that accurate? So maybe we will get 8+ years and it might only cost $500 the next time it goes? Any advice is greatly appreciated. | |||
