Reducing def usage should not hurt the SCR catylist in itself. What hurts it is any soot that may get past the DPF for various reasons like one cracking or the engine producing more than it can filter out. A bad injector for the DEF fluid can cause problems with dried DEF fluid buildup in it too.

Just an FYI for those who may not know, the SCR itself is NOT normally serviceable or cleanable. It is sealed shut at its ends and it would take a cutting torch to get to the element.

When there is a DOC and DPF element preceding it, the SCR element IS a passive device because it is protected from soot buildup by the DPF system. However, for some stupid reason there are idiots who have been doing deletes on trucks that do not bother to hollow it out because it is a lot of work to do and you have to cut it open with a grinder. It is a lot of work to hollow one out and get it back on. Without hollowing it, the bit of soot that a deleted truck makes eventually ALWAYS clogs it. Sometimes it will take up to a few months to happen or only a few weeks. With all emissions fault codes disabled ... you guessed it -- By the time you start experiencing power loss from the blocked up component, severe engine damage starts occurring. - Another huge sign of a bad delete when someone starts saying it does not have to be hollowed out properly or removed.
