I'd really like to see where they got their info from. Where are they seeing 90% of loads are 500 miles or less because I know when I used to go on the road with my dad the minimum his loads were 500 miles. Also f the truck can go 0-60 in 6 seconds what type of load securement are they going to provide because I can see allot of loads shifting. Also them saying it can hold 60 up a grade but what about going down a electric vehicle doesnt have a engine brake so I see allot of brakes getting cooked. I can see this working for a local truck like other people stated but not OTR its just wouldnt be real cost effictive from what I can see. 50k more for a truck thats limited in range and fuel places just doesnt seem like a good idea.

They don’t have a jake brake exactly but regenerative braking, which is way stronger than any compression brake. It basically switches the motors over to being a generator and the current generated goes back to the batteries. Which is why Tesla’s will make awesome garbage trucks. Those guys alternate between flooring the accelerator and the brake pedal all day long.

There is indeed a whole lot of freight out there that doesn’t go further than 500 miles. Most everything Fedex, UPS and US mail do for example. Also, especially between distribution centers such as Walmart where on site charging stations could be placed. Walmart has been chomping at the bit to get rid of their drivers after the Morgan incident and driver wages lawsuit in Cali.

When it comes to long haul, coast to coast spot market trucks that stay out for weeks or months at a time; diesel will be king for the next 30 years or so probably at least. VW killed the small diesels the world over.

RE: Tesla Semi Truck
Ok guess I should have watched a little longer would have saw some of the other stuff. The percent he said is what really threw me off he was like 90% of freight or something like that Its amazing they'd rather invest millions to make trucks and cars drive them selves, but wont invest the time to train their drivers properly which probably would be way cheaper.

I wonder who they're going to blame if their is a accident the company or auto maker. Since no driver who would it fall on or is it kind of just like a auto pilot.

I believe this is the biggest factor in why driver pay has been stagnant or declining. The big carriers are just holding out for not needing drivers at all. Making turnover unimportant
It won't be right away, but drivers will be phased out

Automated means no need for hos compliance, driver pay, workes compensation ect ect. If the truck is aitomated, its not gonna be flying to 60 in 6 seconds. It is soley based on eliminating the driver. Nothing else.
Do they think technicians to keep autonomous trucks running will be even cheaper then driver?

Back when I was doing automation service field work, it was about 30% higher than a diesel mechanic would have made at that time.

The skill level needed to work on high energy closed loop electrical control systems effectively is quite high actually.

Like rawze said, it will probly pay pretty good. It will be a limited number that can work on them, at least in the beginning

RE: Tesla Semi Truck
Found this auto blogger from Australia and he gives some good points about the cult of Tesla. I think the biggest points he made is old elon has never said how much his truck will weigh, and he gives some numbers and relates those numbers to real world circumstances on elon's claimed charging rates.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlvYv1SJJEY

I'm starting to think this is elon's great great granddad

RE: Tesla Semi Truck
Maybe if we purchase one of these super duper trucks our customers will let us plug in and recharge while we’re loading and unloading, like the stores do for there hybrid customers
