RE: What would you do?
The one thing I didnt see mentioned here is checking the crankcase breather filter. If it is clogged it causes excess blow-by pressure in the crankcase, impeding turbo oil drain and causing the turbo to throw oil into the exhaust pipe or charge air cooler.

If the crankcase filter is clogged and oily then the oil drain line check valve should be checked or replaced.

RE: What would you do?
I knew a guy back in the 90's who was about 60 miles from the yard when the engine started giving all the symptoms of a failing injector. He stopped, called everyone who had to be called, the trailer got rescued he got towed to a dealer near the yard. He told the service goomer behind the counter "there is an injector problem", they said OK and pulled it in the shop. Later on they told him they found a few problems one of which was the engine could do with an inframe. He wasn't really surprised as he figured it was about time anyway so told them to go ahead with the inframe. He caught a ride back home to enjoy the home life for a week.

Dealer calls him a week later tells him his truck will be ready the next afternoon so he catches a ride only to be told by the dealer they blew up the engine on the dyno doing a break in. He is a bit upset but what the hell it's on warranty so they will have to do the inframe over that's all. The next news wasn't nearly so pleasant. They told him there was no warranty as it was an injector tip that came off that caused the engine failure and they never replaced the injectors. Take the truck in for a specific item and everything but gets changed, almost sounds like the government runs this shop.

The real kick in the teeth came a while later when his normal mechanic back home who worked for Finning told him for about $2000 less than he paid for 2 dodgy inframes he could have had a factory reman B block CAT installed ready to run.

That is the clear difference between taking your truck to someone who cares and is an actual specialist, and someone who does not. Anyone can make a mistake, anyone. ... it is what a person does AFTER the mistake that counts the most. Someone with integrity will stand behind what they do,.. someone without any will always pawn it off onto someone else.

I cannot count how many people i have met who bragged they only paid 12,000 for an inframe on their ISX, only to find out all they got was an overhaul kit ($4100) and rod/main bearings($800), and nothing more at all. $12,000 - $4900 = $7,100 in labor? -- thats more than $177/ hour. -- Really -- did they actually save money? -- NOPE!.

I totally agree with you. Sooner or later the labor rate will be more than the market can bear. I would chance doing my own inframe if my labor was that high. I have a friend who just inframed his engine. He went to the dealer and got a price of $10k for the kit.....went elsewhere and got it for less than $5k. You just have to shop around. At this point I dont care much about a warranty as much as a shop standing behind their work. I believe towing ur truck back to that shop is better than taking it to a "K Mart" shop where they will patch ur truck back together with overworked parts changers.
