RE: Another wanna be O/O thread
Also some advice on truck shopping. If you find one that has a rebuilt engine I would run. The likelihood of it being done right is next to none. I bought one with a Cummins factory complete engine and it bit me. The next truck I buy will be virgin engine with probably 450k on it. Egr tune up demandate it and fuel pump rebuild. Run it for a season and then overhaul it with brand new head. Realistic cost for overhaul is 30k. That’s what I would budget if I was doing the work and I already have counterbore tools.

RE: Another wanna be O/O thread
Truck shopping is probably one of the most stressful things I've ever done lol. so many variables to consider. Feels like the biggest gamble in life a guy can make. I've got $40k that I was looking to buy outright or use as a down payment and like anyone doing this I'm trying to buy the best truck to hit the road running with the least down time for a few months. Of course that's everyone's goal.
I've got about 10k in cash and another 10k in credit that is to be used for repairs and breakdowns, (hopefully wont have any) and fuel until I get a few settlements coming in. Start up money I don't want to touch unless I have to. I've looked at so many trucks online I'm sick of looking lol.

RE: Another wanna be O/O thread
I’m telling you. I fell your pain. I used this try and by a problem free truck. I’ve come to realize they don’t exist. They just price the pretty ones like there’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. By the one that fits your work. Don’t get to hung up on baby sleeper. Things change you might want alittle more sleeper down the road. Also don’t think you need big rearends and heavy specs. A light weight highway truck can do a lot of ruff work if driven right. Like I would have more sleeper and lighter rears if weight was a concern. Buy the platform that when you get done rebuilding it you got the truck you want. Don’t throw good money at a truck that you hate. A t800 with a 48 or 63 sleeper would be a good platform for about anything.

Some solid advice Magard. I've changed my thinking on the sleeper cause I have to lol. Just not that many small sleeper trucks out there. It opens up more possibilities and I need to keep an open mind that I may not be hauling crude forever. Need to be flexible to roll with what ever work pays the bills.

prostar with isx and decent spec'd rears is good highway truck. highly profitable truck.

prostar with maxforce = total piece of s$irt not worth being a boat anchor. thats why they are so cheap in all the truck papers. Everyone who buys them learns the hard way that the money they saved in buying it so cheap, also puts them of of business due to unending problems.

RE: Another wanna be O/O thread
Little late to the show here but if ur wanting to continue hauling crude or tanks in general i think id look around the shorter 50ish" mid roof pornstar (if u dont mind a smaller sleeper) Even if u have to change the tranny to a 13/18 and put in 3.55-3.73 gears you're still cheaper than a damn petercar.. the prostar imo is a great truck u just have to be patient with her quirks and be able to work on her urself. Tons of fleet trucks for sale which drives the price down, many of them lower mileage. They just arent usually O/O specd trucks like you find with the big hood peterworths. I bought my 15 model from a dealer in VA who specs them prty nicely for some small fleets that lease from him. 425k miles now and 60k on the inframe (ya know because epa knows best on how to build engines)

RE: Another wanna be O/O thread
I’m not really tied into any particular brand. Just trying to find the right engine, tranny and rear gear ratio and not have a million miles on em lol. I don’t mind midsize sleeper but do want to stick to a short wheel base. Some of these locations aren’t the easiest to get to even in a day cab. Really glad I found this web sight. Lots of good opinions and ideas. Yesterday was my 50th and the wife comes home, gets me a beer and asks what I wanna do. I said I’m watching these Rawze videos and reading lol. I told her it was to help shape our future.
