I’m an Army vet I’m married and have a step daughter. Currently I work for a small local trucking company. I drive a 2017 international lt day cab. I bring home around 450 a week. I’m home every night and off weekends. I have found a 2009 pro star eagle with the cummins isx435 for 15k. As an owner op with this company I’ll bring home 2500 to 3500 a week home every night and off weekends. I need to do something so I think I’m going to buy the truck. It has 598k miles. I drive around 400 to 500 miles a day. I haul cardboard boxes and coke loads as well as roll stock. Do you think this truck would serve me. If my credit union will cover it my payment should be rather low.

RE: Thoughts on this truck
Are you in a position to spend $20K-$30K on an inframe and other repairs right away? It's quite possible it will need it.How many miles are on it and is the mandate still operational?

RE: Thoughts on this truck
Maybe look for another company instead of taking on more responsibility. 450 a week is a joke if you’re running the miles you say you will run as a owner operator. It’s like half of what you should easily be able to do.
Also. That 450’a week has taxes out. Owner operator settlements won’t. Maybe go to company and change how much comes out of check. Claim more dependents if you are getting big returns back.

RE: Thoughts on this truck
Is it an 870 or 871? 600k wouldnt bother me if its been properly maintained but be prepared for things like injectors (800 each plus labor), fueling actuators (500 each plus labor), turbo (5k each plus labor), turbo actuator (1k each plus labor). Tires (alot of dealers throw cheap recaps on that will take u to ur load and come apart. Other things to consider are what rear gear ratio is in it and what transmission is in it. 3.36 and under with a 10speed would indicate its likely been lugged a lot. 3.55+ with a 10 or 13 would mean its spent its time spinning 1400+ and less lugging the ant hills. If u buy a truck be sure and keep at least 10k in ur acct for those repairs and down time.

RE: Thoughts on this truck
2009 would be 871 2006 and some 2007s are 870s.

RE: Thoughts on this truck
Yeah looks like a decent truck for 15k it’s not beat up from what the pictures show.

Those miles are low for that year lol.... maybe it’s been rebuilt ?

Before you buy it, do a pre purchase inspection or do one your self and come back to us to help you out.

You have one the last generation cummins motor that can actually do a million miles with proper care. Check for faults and the history threw the ecm.

My truck was a pain “ still is sometimes “ in the ass, if your willing to make it work then go for it!. Be prepared to spend maybe 10k-25k your first year. If you can do most of the work your self you will save more! N spend less. Also you will learn how to properly do everything.

Your post implies that you have a lot to learn about trucking and truck purchasing. That or there is a lot you have not mentioned.

First of all, why is a 2009 truck only have less than 600k miles on it? That truck is 10 years old by now, and next,.. Why is it so cheap if that is the original miles? -- this is red flags to me.

NEXT .. do you know what rears it has? - what the shape of the engine is in? .. have you even looked it over? have you looked much past its paint job? Things like pulling the valve cover and checking the overhead cams? - Seeing how sooty the thing may be?

Does it still have the factory painted red sensors on the engine? -- (neglect?)

Shocks?, unusual tire wear?, clutch?, driveline?, the list is long.

full ecm report? - lifetime fuel mileage, regen history?. etc.etc.

and then there is the fact that if you don't spec it for your type of operations, it will cost you thousands if not tens of thousands every year in wasted fuel and other expenses.

expected speeds vs rear ratio, and all the other things related.

that is what comes to mind right away .. I am sure there is a lot more.

====

At $15k a person can drop some money in parts and fix it up and it still would not a bad investment,.. Just make sure you have some $$$ to work with for getting it road worthy again. - If the engine is no good, then it is not worth more than about 10k even if the rest is in good shape. - whatever you do, don't expect to buy a $15,000 truck and think your going to haul freight with it without major issues and expenses right away. - might as well go the the casino and gamble,.. your odds would be higher.

Rawze strikes again.....for someone that is new to being an owner op like myself, the advice that Rawze gives hurts at first because it seems like it'll be impossible to keep track of everything BUT once you settle down and get your mind around what he's saying you will realize he really knows what he's talking about. If you follow his advice I really think you will be on a road to success. THANKS AGAIN FOR EVERYTHING RAWZE
