I've asked myself that many times. :blush:

All I can say is team truck, almost all light loads, minimal idling. Never pushed the RPMs hard while accelerating. Took it easy climbing hills, always. Never kept running her when something needed to be fixed. Delvac only until 800,000 then I began adding some Lucas. Leaned heavily on a small network of personally chosen shops. And for whatever it's worth, had a standing rule to never use "MHC" - no matter what.

In other words, my wife and I just babied her and it shows. I'll post a pic later today. Seriously, to us she looks like a 250,000 mile truck or even better.

I.E.> A bad, leaking, or improperly installed NOx sensor at the back of the turbo... OR someone has replaced it with a fake sensor, or Chinese after-market one. It is basicly complaining that the sensor is not reading ZERO with engine off, during self test ... OR it is not changing at all when engine is revving up and down and under loads.

It will not clear this fault until you get the engine and exhaust 350+-F degrees, drive around a bit under varying conditions, and the self tests that were failing pass their checks again.


Thanks again, Rawze. Sounds like you think there's a chance she might clear the code herself if she gets hot enough. There's very little chance I have a fake or Chinese sensor.

Since I don't have Insite I guess I'll try the drive-around approach. Wish me luck.

The ISX has the least amount of internal wear at 1500-1700 rpm range 1600-1650 being the center point, especially when climbing hills, etc.

RPM's much below 1400 will cause the most amount of internal wear when under any kind of heavy load application.

I tell you though, it is nice to see something like this. I am more motivated with my truck now! Let's see 700k! Then I may have Hag rebuild it but i want more then 700k out of it, i would take care of it so should last longer then this first go round.

if shes not pushing smoke out the oil fill or blow by tube then shes not due for an overhaul maybe some new bearings but the expensive part can wait. if its treated right it wont be all the sudden BAMO smoking like a chimney it will be a gradual slow decline in performance/mileage and a gradual slow growth of smoke out any open orifice attached to the crank case.

Here's where we are today. :blush:


I followed up on Rawze's advice but couldn't generate enough heat to clear the code. As a result, I took her to a local shop and had them initiate a forced regen for me this morning. It took an hour and a half to complete, but at the end of the day she's clear and good-to-go.

I have the smaller brother to the ISX, an ISC. My gov runs up to 2400rpm. I figure that a similar rule could be applied to the smaller engines, maybe least wear around 1800 rpm? It seems to like pulling there best.
