2009 ISX White Smoke No Codes
I have a 2009 KW T800 with an isx15. We have been getting intermittent white/blueish smoke. The local cummins shop has run tests, replaced injectors, replaced the diesel doses for the dpf. Nothing helps. It's starts fine idles and runs great but intermittently when you are driving it will just pour smoke.Any ideas? The shop is out of ideas they don't know where to go from here.

No blowby and a little oil consumption but nothing that would make this much smoke. Pretty much can make it almost hard to see behind you sometimes.

Perform some snap test with the exhaust unplugged before the aftertreatment. If you got to much smoke perform snap test in cut out. disable 1,2 or 3 cylinder and make different combination to find which cylinder produce the excessive smoke.

Is the engine de-mandated? (deleted)?... or is all the emissions systems in place?.

Everything is stock so far but we are really contemplating de-mandating it to see if that helps. It starts great no smoke at idle only while driving. At times I see puffs smoke, other times there's just a straight cloud of smoke and sometimes it's clean. But it does seem to be getting worse as time goes on. Been fighting this for over a year now.

Is that on insight or are you just talking about running it with the exhaust off before the dpf?

YOUR MOST LIKELY CHASING A BIG FAT NOTHING-BURGER!!!! ..

The DPF system IS GOING TO MAKE HUGE PLUMES OF WHITE/geayish SMOKE on occasion.. IT IS PERFECTLY NORMAL.. AND ESPECIALLY SO IN COLDER AND WETTER WEATHER!!!>..

It is perfectly normal for the truck to smoke like hell (white/bluish smoke) when it does a regen when going up a hill. My truck did this even when the truck was brand spanking new, nothing wrong with the system or engine at all. The smoke would be so bad sometimes that you could not even see the trailer behind you, especially when the weather got cooler. It is because sometimes fuel will build up in the DPF because it is not hot enough down there to ignite, then it ignites all at once when you hit a hill or an on-ramp. When it finally does ignite, it is so bad, you can't even see behind you for the cloud of white smoke as it starts to burn, sometimes for several minutes.

DO AN EGR TUNE-UP!. Replace all the old sensors, especially that IMAP, etc... and Make sure that the engine itself is running in tip-=top shape. As healthy as possible.

Make sure you don't have any exhaust leaks.

CLEAN THAT DOSER INJECTOR TIP behind that turbo really well .. or replace the doser if it is more than 400k miles old.

Pull the DOC and DPF (and post pictures of their faces) if it has been more than than 250k miles since the last time they have been removed and cleaned. Have them cleaned (Baked, de-ashed, flow tested) at a certified stealer#hit for a few hundred bucks.

Make sure the engine has no coolant loss whatsoever. If so then find the leaks.. and test the EGR cooler too.

Don’t need any software for snap acceleration test. Unplug the exhaust before the DOC. You can find good video over the web on how to perform it. Done snap test in cut out only if you find excessive smoke.
For cut out you need insit to perform it.
