Cars and suspension parts tolerances nowadays - mikkhh - Today
Having to replace rear suspension ball joints on my 20 year old Mercedes cars. Genuine ball joint is 74 euros per piece (need 2pcs), aftermarket no name brand is 3euro piece, big name brands 7 euros (makes also bearings), 10 euros (German aftermarket brand), 12 euros (same logos that most genuine parts have too, top of the line German aftermarket brand). No name aftermarket suspension arm with pressed in ball joint 58 euros, most likely will order to test what ball joint dimensions is there, maybe arms are smaller there.
Got old ball joints out, cleaned bores and there is huge slop with new parts.
Well I decided to take out calipers to see where the problem may be. I see no need to use micrometer to measure those ball joints, they are really out of spec...
Outer diameter on old genuine is 40.10mm, aftermarket 10 euro part has 39,94mm diameter, 8 euro part has 39.99mm diameter. How the heck it is even possible? Miss external diameter by 0.10-0.15mm.
Will order genuine ones to test, maybe they are skewed up too nowadays, it will take a week to get genuine ones.
