RE: BLACK RESIDUE IN COOLANT RESERVOIR Not sure about detroit, but in the ISX, the most common cause is the oil cooler. Is seeps just enough to make a black sooty type buildup in the resivior tank if the oil is normally black / full of soot. What color is your oil?. Usually, the only time oil cooler will only make it be brown-ish in color is if the oil is not getting blackened.
