Well... I need to give credit where credit is due...

It looks like Donaldson filters at one point solved this issue with the o-ring getting sucked into the enigne as well. Here is a recent pic of one that I took myself (verified this one was not a chineesium fake) ...

   
the ones that are safe have a large rubber flap that cannot get sucked into the engine, instead of a simple (dangerous) o-ring.
