RE: Tire rolling resistance (copied from another forum).
Last year I found EPA's SmartWay list and bought my drive and trailer tires that were on that list.

I run a 48' flatbed and often deliver to some rather sketchy construction sites. That's fine for my trailer tires as I won't rip the tread off the spread axles turning, but the drives have to be able to dig in the mud.

I use Advanta AV9000D drives. They have a closed shoulder and big meaty lugs.

For my spread axle I use Advance GL285T.

For my steers, I've stayed with the Ironman I-61S that was available when I needed one. I've had issues with weird wear patterns and took it to a local shop near me for 3 axle alignments. It;s not on the SmartWay list though.

All appear to be holding up well. I buy the drives and trailer tires at a Goodyear in Dublin GA (Bubba's) which is about a 140 mile R/T which is in my pickup so that's not an issue. The steers I can buy locally. I mount all my own tires which saves me a bunch on labor. Not that fooling with 100 Lb. tires is easy for a 64 year old. Especially when you forget to soap up the bead...

The other investment I made was adding crossfire equalizers to all my duals. There's nothing worse after driving 5,000 miles thumping your tires every morning and night. You get home and check them with a gauge to find them all right about where you left them... and the next morning one is empty. A Schrader valve decided to leak after you checked the pressure with a "truck tire pressure gauge" like they taught you in CDL school. Makes you scared to check them but you really need all those PSI's there. Now, a quick walk around shows they are all good. That was $650.88 well spent IMO. They will indicate if they are 10 PSI too high or low, and if there's an imbalance it will close so one flat won't let the air out of the other tire while indicating more than 10 PSI low. The only drawback I can see is if you want to try running a higher or lower pressure you will have to replace them as you order them based on the pressure you want.
