Tire rolling resistance (copied from another forum).
My own thought on Tire rolling resistance comes from talking to others, and from dealing with my own truck. My own conclusions are that Tire rolling resistance is VERY important on trucks that carry heavy freight, but trucks that carry light weight freight, rolling resistance has little to no measurable effect on fuel mileage. As well, the faster or slower you go down the freeway, the more or less effect it will have too. The slower you drive, the less tire rolling resistance comes into play as well. Also, how much air pressure you have in your tires plays a huge roll in how effective a low-rolling resistive tire actually is. I inflate my own tires to a full 120 psi to get the most out of this, and have never had an issue with doing this.

My own opinion is that rolling resistance, its importance, and how much it effects your fuel costs is really based on several factors. The biggest being how fast you drive, and how heavy your truck is most of the time. I use the lowest rolling resistance tires I can get, because I am usually heavy due to reefer freight, but I do not drive fast. I stay around 57-60 mph, but even so, low rolling resistance helps me save enough fuel to justify the extra costs of these types of tires. If I were only pulling light freight, it probably would not matter much, and just about any tire would work fine. Also, the lower the tread a tire has, the more efficient it becomes. This means that if your pulling heavy freight all the time, it is better to have worn down tires than new ones if you want to save fuel.

A few weeks ago I swapped out my 726EL’s that were down to 5/32’s to brand new XDN2’s. At the same time I replaced the drums/brakes and recalibrated my speedometer(went from tall to low pro). I figured my 7 mpg average would lose a few tenths, no big deal but I’m struggling to get more than 6.2-6.3, and sometimes less than 6. I’m really thinking next spring of getting some straight treads and having two sets of tires. Bad mileage sucks.

I invested in 2 sets of drives. M710's and R283's (16-ply). We had the bright idea to use theR283's in the summer because they have a lower rolling resistance than the M710's. Then use the M710's in the winter.

The R283's did improve the fuel mileage about 0.3 mpg above the M710's. The only problem is that they would spin out way too often in gravel and in parking lots. They also got dangerous in heavy rains. - They had to go, they were dangerous in my book.

We went back to the M710's all year around. We have been using the R283's for steer tire replacements as we need them.

Personally, I think the concept is novel, but ...

A) Dangerous/Risky for a highway truck.

B) If your down in the 6 - 7 mpg range, it is NOT YOUR TIRES that is going to get you any significant gains. It is likely your driving and other things you need to work on long before spending a lot of money on those last few tenths by running lo-roll steers on the back end.


That is my own experience any ways.

BTW: 726's are horrible on fuel mileage. The extra bit of tread life they have is NOT worth it.

Your speedo and engine tire size settings will not effect your fuel mileage. You should always be checking your fuel mileage by way of the fuel pump and a calculator.

Whenever we replaced tires and from a worn out 5/32's or so tread depth to a brand new set of the same exact tires, we loost about 0.7 mpg for the first 80k miles or so while they break in. That is a lot, so we decided we need to run our tires as long as down to minimum absolutely possible this go around. We get about 450k miles or so out of our drives so thankfully we have only had to suffer that fuel mileage hit a couple times so far.

If you run light, rolling resistance does not do a lot for you. Wear should be considered along with the things you mentioned.

If you run medium to heavy however, rolling resistance is absolutely everything. It trumps wear/longevity and anything else by leaps and bounds in long term operating costs. Wear is not even a consideration at all because you save so much fuel with better rolling resistance than any tires that are cheaper that "wears less", that you save as much as 10x fuel savings alone during their life over the little bit of price differences between them.

If you can compare 2 low-roll tires and they are almost the same, but one "wears less", even then, it is a toss-up. The one that claims to wear less, is usually more expensive and the cost savings would likely never be seen, but who knows. - I say you can't go wrong either way, as you drives should last a long time any ways.

Lastly, if someone has to worry about drive tire costs all the time, they are replacing their tires too often. - THAT should be the main focus above all else. A good set of drives that are well cared for on a highway truck should last most people a minimum of 350+k miles and 400 - 450k+ miles if you drive them right. If someone is changing tires more often that that, then there had better be a good reason (off-roads, over 80k weights, etc.), and your freight rates should reflect this too. Higher operating costs = charge more money to your customers to offset it. Just a reminder that sometimes people focus on the wrong things when other, more expensive things should be resolved first.

Just FYI but XDN2 have some of the worst rolling resistance michelin offers. It's the open shoulder design that causes the loss in efficiency.

I have about 150k on my 726's and they are already half worn out.

Lately, I do go to customers that require alot of tight turns and half of my driving miles are city. My dedicated route is only 75 miles a day for all miles, I do occasionally run overweight isotanks to a plant 45 miles away for extra money if I have the time...I average 800 miles a week if I use at least 62 hours of my 70.

Because my inners are rusty steel and I have curb rash from a previous asshole on my steers, I'll be replacing my springs, bushings, upgrading to better shocks and replacing my wheels before I put on a new set of 710's. Im even changing my aging steering box and tierods, etc because of it before it goes (768k on it now) I'm not impressed with the 726's...I would scrub off speed on a slight decline at 85k gross. That is HORRIBLE rolling resistance, not to mention it's an aerodynamic brick.

I will be keeping in mind what rawze said, and I agree, your profit must reflect that level of wear and tear...I get paid very well now as a local driver, and since I run near and slow, my maintenance cost dropped an average of 70% while my gross jumped 25%. I have no reason to complain, the truck is paid for, and in the next few months, it'll be getting the works to keep those profits coming in.

I'd like to know the RR numbers for my steering tires, Bridgestone M854's size 385/65R22.5's. I know it's a gross number, but I weigh almost 15,000lbs bobtail on the front end
I run Michelin XDS2's on the drives, RR 142. But for me traction trumps RR on my drives, and won't even discuss a different tire. When I went to these from the factory BS something or others grippers, I went through stuff I knew I'd be chaining up with most anything else. That to me is worth any fuel economy price paid on the drives. Chains suck, and I have to do it more often than I like because of what I do, any reason not to is more than enough not to.
Kinda surprised, I run BS R197's on my jeep and booster, and they are RR 95 (R195F was the predecessor to the R197, so that's the number I looked at). I run the R197's because of their sidewall payload rating, I do get looked at for that, and they also just run cool and wear smooth.
I don't see the retread number that I run on the main trailer, it is a Bandag SST tread, and I cap my own casings. They wear like steel. I tried several different trailer tires and couldn't keep them from pulling the edges off of anything virgin. A buddy was running these and told me he cant believe how well they wore, so I tried a set. I only run them to ~40% tread depth and yank 'em. Even at that I get twice the life of any virgin I tried, and at roughly 56% the cost of the cheapest virgin, and under half of high end ones. I hate them, but they work. They require attention/inspection to make sure the cap isn't separating, but at 20k an axle all tires need attention. I've never blown a cap because it was a cap. I've blown a couple, but they came apart at flat repair points, I've had virgins do the same, so I don't count that. Weight takes its toll. I've had 2 separate in over 6 years, caught both and got warranty on both.
