Hi guys, I recently purchased PETE 388 with a 500 in it. I'm having problems where the truck will limit the turbo to 20psi. Before the turbo limits and the truck is running proper the check engine light will flash for a few seconds and go away, with the occasional quick and short turbo "burp"After the turbo derates they won't come on again.. Using the Cummins software I was able to pull this codes. Sometimes it will do this for an hour, sometimes for the entire day and carry over until the next morning.. I've replaced the sensor on the intake because it was all blocked up with soot.my outside air temp gauge is traded way below what it should be, I'll be changing that this weekend as well.

I forgot to add. Before putting the truck in service I had the dpf removed and sent out to be cleaned.. The truck regens onces sometimes twice a day

Here are your codes. Looks like you have a soot monster on your hands. I will wait for the experts to come on board to diagnose. But at least we have the codes sorted out. And, it looks like an EGR tuneup is in your future, along with the Doser replacement. And you will need a Pyrometer Gauge too if you do not have one. Rawze has a video on how that is all done. Looks like you have a Trubo Boost Gauge, or were you reading off of Insite? If reading off of Insite, get a Turbo Gauge installed too.

2961 = Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature - Data Valid But Above Normal Operating Range - Least Severe Level

2764 = Exhaust Gas Pressure 1 - Data Valid But Above Normal Operating Range - Moderately Severe Level

4214 = Aftertreatment 1 Diesel Oxidation Catalyst System - Data Valid But Below Normal Operating Range - Moderately Severe Level

I'm reader off the gauge on my dash... You can feel it in the pedel, the truck has no pick up. Especially when I'm loaded... I. Appreciate the quick answer, but I knew what they codes stood for as I pulled them off of the Cummins software. I wanted the experts to chime in and maybe have some advice for me, I feel as if I'm chasing my tail..

Well, it looks like you have at least two, if not three bad sensors related the the EGR. I would Immediately do the EGR Tuneup. If not, you can pull these sensors and try to clean them with a dry tooth brush, knock the soot off of them. Some are sensitive to solvents, some aren't. On the drivers side there is a sensor up at the front of the motor, close to where the Radiator Thermostat is, there are one or two metal lines coming off of the motor below the sensor, those lines may be clogged or need cleaning. I am not that technical on these things, and my memory ain't for shi#t in regards to what these sensors are called by Cummins... But if you go to Quickserve and run these codes through the analyze section of the code reader, it will take you directly to the sensors that are giving you trouble, if you have not already done that. Wish I could be of more help. You are sooted up and really need to clean that thing out.

One thing too, you are regening to much, which can cause sever damage if other factors are in play. Do you have a pyro and turbo boost gauge?

I have a boost. No pyro.. I forgot to say that I also pulled off all the intake from the egr valve going into the head and clean them best I could with a tooth brush.. I will check out what you said to track down the sensors.. I feel as if it's a sensor issue, has anyone had problem with the OAT(outside air temp) screwing with the truck. My truck thinks it's always -20 to -50 degrees outside, meanwhile it's 50degrees.. I bought the truck from a friend of mine who specd the truck me and is the original owner. He says the truck has been doing daily regens since new.. We run anywhere between 400-600miles daily.

I also wanna state that I'm a dump truck based out of NJ/ny. We do more idling/slow driving then you Otr/trailer drivers most likely do

A dump truck eh? Boy, don't know, but still if it is regening daily, or more, that does not sound right. And I would get a pyro on there ASAP. You could be toasting that motor and not even realize it.

As far as the outside temp gauge, is that a reading you are getting off of the ECM or are you talking about the outside temp/thermometer to tell you the outside temp like I have hanging on the outside of my kitchen window? If it is the kitchen window one, that should have no affect on your motor, sounds like a bad probe or gauge. ECM reading, yes that can screw with your motor and something is wrong.

look for an exhaust leak between your turbo and your doc, there are some gaskets that go between the exhaust tubes and the v-clamps that the dealers sometime lever out, if you do a forced regen the leaks should be easy to spot once the dozer starts it's fuel injection cycle.
