Being out of centeal PA, I pull the PA hills all the time. CM870, 10 speed 3.55 rears. Gettin 7+ every week pulling average flatbed freight.

Drop the gear and keep your foot out of it. Less stress less fuel consumption and less engine wear. Now, if you need to replace the trans for mechanical issues and you have access to a reasonably priced 13 speed... Well then get at it. Splitting those gears makes for a lot more gear movements but allows you to keep the RPM's up above 1500 all the time when pulling. I'm gonna look into one here shortly when i pull the trans to replace a junk rattling out of balance clutch. But from what I've seen lately, reman'ed 13 speeds come with a healthy price tag. So stuffing a 10 back in it may be my cheapest best option.
