As you remove the pan, you want the gasket to stick to the engine block, not the pan.

There are the 4 corners where it will leak (where the block meets other components at its 4 corners) even if the gasket does not get damaged. Be especially careful in those aresa and use some silicone like the book says if it does come loose in those corners.

The pan is quite a bit heavier than it looks/seems, support it with something while getting it away from the block.

Be very gentle and patient with it and you should be fine.

You should only have to drop it down a bit in the front and not have to completely move it out of the way to get to the pump if all you are doing is accessing the plunger.
