CM2250 loud engine whine, need advice
My truck is a 2013 Peterbilt 386 with a CM2250. The truck has an engine whine that is considerably louder than the motor running. You can hear it from across the parking lot. It sounds like a PTO running or a supercharger. It gets louder with rpm as well. I spoke with rawze and he mentioned it could be the oil pump TSB.

Does anyone have any suggestions or insight on what could be causing this?

Here are links to 3 different videos I recorded so you can hear the noise.

Did it just start or has it been making the noise?

I just purchased this truck last week. Drove it 400 miles home, can't be for sure but I don't remember hearing it when I picked it up

Thanks rawze!

I read through the thread, and seems the new style pumps are the culprit? What can I do for mine if the old ones are not avaliable?

Would purchasing this part # oil pump per the other thread be the fix? Hate to throw $550 at it not to stop the whine

do you have any background about the truck? know any recent work that was done to it?

based on your post, the videos (the 3rd video seems most distinct) and my own recent experience with a new oil pump, i'd be inclined to agree that it's likely the source of the noise. however more information, if available, might point toward other sources.

-------------

MY new oil pump makes a nice whine. When I installed it I noticed (as someone else on here also said - in the thread Rawze referenced above) that the gear it meshed with had a nice visible wear pattern from the previous pump *** re-read the other thread, seems the wear pattern might not be from the oil pump ***. Functionally not a concern, but it might account for the sound. However, the whine from my engine is most noticeable at idle and usually loudest either standing directly in front of the engine, or most especially standing behind the cab. While driving, or even running at a high idle, the whine becomes less distinct, at least for me. It also seems to be less noticeable after the engine has warmed up, but that could just be me acclimating to the sound.

I guess my point here is that the whine may be from gears, but not necessarily from the oil pump. The fuel pump and air compressor, cam, and idler gears and (like mine) a scissor gear are all potential sources of a similar sound.

The only info I have on the truck is that it was inframed at kenworth jacksonville Florida. I have the paperwork on it and does not show a new oil pump on the paperwork.

I did track down the previous owner and he has not done any work to it other than replacing the entire emissions system minus the egr and cooler. Also has a new air compressor.

It's a very annoying sound to say the least

Edit: I just spoke to the previous owner, sent him the videos and he said it never made that noise when he owned it. Which makes sense, I didn't hear this noise when I looked at and test drove the truck. I first noticed it pulling down my road from the 400mi trip home

Another thing I just thought of. The oil was brand new when I picked it up, the truck kept flashing regen needed on the way home, then the last 50 miles it actually derated. The oil already is black. I don't think this would cause a whine?
