I would have timed it properly any ways... all the old manuals required you to time the compressor to reduce knocking and prevent imbalance to the engine.

I have seen my share of them in the past that sounded like crap, simply because they were clocked wrong onto the engine.

the fuel pump has the same issues. it need to be clocked correctly too. it gets real noisy if it is not.

Not saying that is your issue... but you should always strive for the best practices when replacing components. - Sometimes they sound like crap though no matter what. The reman compressors are usually the loudest for some reason or another.
